Water Main Break
A water main has broken at the intersection of 4th and Girard. I am told it is a 30" main, and that the hole in the street is about 20 feet in diameter. As of 9PM Saturday July 1, the Water Dept. is still trying to find the shut-off valve for the main. I am informed by police that the Water Dept. is going to have to shut off a number of area valves between now and 10:30PM, and then turn them back on, one by one, to isolate the proper valve. There is some serious flooding on Girard between Lawrence and 3rd, and on Cambridge between Orianna and Bodine, and on Orianna, 3rd and Bodine between Girard and Cambridge. Because the main break is a city liability, the city should be out very quickly to drain, dry and sanitize affected homes, and to replace any damaged mechanicals. The timing couldn't be worse, given the holiday weekend, but as always the NLNA will be doing whatever we can to get info and provide city referrals. The city's track record last year in repairing homes damaged by a main break on 3rd Street was excellent; hopefully they will act equally well this time around. For those keeping track, this is the third main break in as many years. In the late summer of '04 there was a break at 4th and George; almost exactly a year ago today, there was a break in a giant 48" main on Wildey at 3rd; and now this. FYI it appears that this main may be a transmission main - a main that takes water from one area to another. I say this because right now it appears that nearby residents still have full water pressure in their sinks and such. So - once the Water Dept. sorts out the shutoff valve situation - it is likely this break will not deprive our homes of running water for any significant amount of time. I'd like to know how a main break is a city liability, but the sewer backing up, causing flooding isn't...? |

Our house was affected by last years flood, and the initial response was fast. Many thanks to Pedro Ramos for his attention. The eventual reimbursement (car, washer, dryer, damage to house) took a lawyerand six months to make happen. Advice offered. Write down the name of anyone that tells you something specific, and if possible get it in writing. Tell them you have a bad memory, and have them fax it or email it. The water dept claims adjustor, Cynthia Gilbert, is a complete idiot. Do NOT trust anything she says to be true. Send anything to her less than certified mail and I bet she looses it. It sucks, but the city is self insured, so they will drag out your claim in the hopes that you loose interest pursuing it, at least that's my opinion. Document everything, names , conversations, dates, everything. |

Brian, we're back home at becker now. Power and water both seem to work fine. The sub-basement is still being pumped out, but otherwise things are normal. --Iyad |

We live at Becker too and we took off with cats in tow to family up in poconos area and we're still there. Does anyone have any idea how long power was out? I'm worried about the smell coming from my fridge when we return later tonight. Also, is the water drained yet inside/outside? Just wondering since we probably won't get back until late. Any updates would be great. Thanks. |

Yeah...the little hills we have in NL stop alot of this water from flooding the whole area from 5th to 3rd, becasue this water was trying it best to go uphill. |

Extensive damage happened in the garage of the cigar factory. It seems there are problems with insurance coverage. Anyone with advice, names or information on getting the city to cover damages? This would be greatly appreciated. People lost cars, personal property in storage etc. |

I would try to contact Pedro Ramos, managing director for the city. He lives in our neighborhood and may be able to steer you in the right direction. |

there was damage big time. Numerous cars needed to be towed out of the building (total loss) and storage sheds are already growing mold after being in 2 or more feet of water with everything inside ruined. That night nobody could spend the night at home because electricity was cut off due to water. People needed to look for hotels at 11 PM with children in tow. |

As for the city covering damages to cars -- the water department will first demand that your own auto insurance cover the claim. If your insurance will NOT cover it then you have to present a letter to prove it -- and only then does the water department consider reimbursement. This was our experience in last years flood.. also, myself and several of my neighbors mysteriously had any letters that were sent non certified "go missing" -- and emails and phone calls to the woman handling claims (Cynthia Gilbert) were not returned ... even a letter delivered in person to the water department vanished -- however -- the day we hired a lawyer and HE called the water department threatening that we would go to court -- was the day that we finally received a response that set things in motion as far as being reimbursed. |

Well that the rule number one when doing anything that has to do with money: Never do it without a lawyer present. |

Could RGB please contact me off the forum for the name of the lawyer used to get reimbursement from city. The city has declined paying us for damages to our property in the Girard street flood. We are so frustrated and disgusted with them!! |

I do not know how to get in touch with you. I need an email address or something like that. I know the water department is frustrating to deal with. It took us over 6 months to get reimbursed. (and it took a lot of prodding) |
