Apparently the police were making an arrest of a robbery suspect, and a car coming up 3rd Street (at Poplar) deliberately hit the cop, and broke his leg. Mary |

Looks like it was drug related. Here is the text from the CBS site: Feb 21, 2007 12:19 pm US/Eastern Officers Struck By Car In Northern Liberties (CBS 3) PHILADELPHIA Philadelphia Police said two officers were injured, one seriously, after they were intentionally run over in the Northern Liberties section of the city. Authorities said two undercover narcotics officers were attempting to arrest a suspect on foot when they were struck by a car driven another suspect near Orianna and Wildey Streets around 11 a.m. Friday. Both officers were taken to Hahnemann Hospital. One is listed in serious condition with a broken leg while the status of second officer is unknown. Officials said two suspects are in custody, while they are searching for a third. Further details were unavailable. (© MMVII, CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved.) |

This happened right in front of my house. It was actually at Wildey and Orianna. The other details are basically correct, as I understand. |

From KYW: Speeding Car Pins Undercover Cop During N. Liberties Bust by KYW's Michelle Durham A Philadelphia undercover officer was struck by a car on Wednesday morning in Northern Liberties while he was in the process of arresting a robbery suspect. Police say the suspect's brother was behind the wheel of the car and exclaimed, "You're not going to arrest my brother" before gunning the accelerator and trapping the officer between the vehicle and a utility pole. The officer was rushed to Hahnemann Hospital in critical but stable condition, where surgeons prepared to operate in an attempt to save the officer's leg. According to police, two plainclothes officers were in the midst of making the arrest at Orianna and Wildey Streets, with the suspect of a Tuesday robbery in custody and in handcuffs, awaiting a van to pick up the suspect when the car came at them. The officer's name was not immediately released until his family could be notified. The other officer was not seriously hurt and was also being treated at Hahnemann. http://www.kyw1060.com/pages/254764.php?contentType=4&contentId=340074 |

and this from the Inquirer: 2 officers struck by car in Northern Liberties By Joseph A. Gambardello INQUIRER STAFF WRITER A man drove into two police officers during the arrest of a robbery suspect in Northern Liberties today, injuring both officers, one of them critically, authorities said. Police said the ramming was deliberate, and they arrested the motorist two blocks away. The officers were attempting to arrest the suspect about 11:20 a.m. at Third and Poplar Streets when they were hit. Both officers were rushed to Hahnemann Hospital, police said. One had suffered a possible broken leg and was reported in critical conditon. The other suffered bumps and bruises. Police Commissioner Sylvester M. Johnson said the officer's leg was "pretty mangled." The officer was expected to undergo surgery later today. The men arrested were brothers, Johnson said. The robbery suspect, who was wanted for an incident yesterday, was in the back of marked police car when the other brother, in a green Dodge Intrepid, shouted: "You're not going to take my brother to jail!" Johnson said. The driver then sped toward a cluster of police officers, who scattered, and managed to strike two of them. The driver was stopped and taken into custody at Third and Wildey, police said. The names of the officers and the two men in custody were not immediately released. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Contact staff writer Joseph Gambardello at 215-854-2153 or jgambardello@phillynews.com. http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/16748973.htm |

On the Philebrity video, a witness to the car crash incident mentioned the Liberties Walk assualt, and also mentioned that a store 'right over there' (and he points, but the camera doesn't follow--c;mon camera guy ;) )was robbed this AM and the perps were already under survielance. From the location of the interview, I'd venture a guess that the store was the Liberty Deli at Poplar & Orianna. Can anyone confirm that? |

My 2 cents - The cop who was run down may be classified as stable but his leg was "mangled". Don't know about you - but mangled is not good at all. His recovery will be long and traumatic. Should we host some kind of fund raiser to help with his recovery? Jenn, Matt, Mary??? When you think about it - the punk who stole the cell phone would have received a 3 - 6 month sentence (if that) for stealing a cell phone. Now, his brother is probably looking at 10 - 15 years for attempted murder for running down the cop. What a waste! Both for him and his brother. Not for nothing - these crimes are happening in the MIDDLE OF THE DAY! WTF! Injured cop faces long road back Leg is saved, more surgeries to come By DAVID GAMBACORTA gambacd@phillynews.com 215-854-5994 Officer Joseph Glovacz narrowly escaped death Wednesday at the hands of an enraged motorist. To get through the long road to recovery - which will include multiple major surgeries - he'll have to rely on faith and the prayers of those closest to him, his commander said yesterday. "We're trying to pray our way through this, and he's trying to hope for the best," said Capt. Lou Campione, head of the 26th Police District. Glovacz has spent his entire 11-year career in the 26th, headquartered at Girard and Montgomery avenues in Fishtown. |

We agree about a fund raiser, and would certainly like to help out, it would probably have to be someplace like Finnegan's Wake for the size of the group that would be interested, but count us in for food contributions and raffle prizes. We did a benefit for a neighbor with cancer and raised $l2,000. Anything we can do to help this officer and his family would really show what a strong community we have here. Let's rise to the occasion!!! |

I had another fundraiser idea: a lot of law enforcement people eat at Zagori in Liberty Walk. I was wondering if we could do something in conjuction with them. Maybe a weeklong event where a special menu item includes a built in contribution? This could be in addition to any one day special event. But could we do it somewhere besides Finnegans? I really can't stand that place, and it bugs me to give them more business, especially neighborhood business. Do something at Cescephe or in the park once the weather breaks? Or how about at the firefighters union hall? That's at Fifth & Callowhill and I'll bet they'd be willing to give some sort of preferential treatment for an event like this. |

Regarding these crimes happening in the middle of the day, this is from a recent NLNA email: "The police districts ask that if anyone sees a school age person on the street on school days during school hours, to call 911 to report a truant. This can be followed up with a call to the 6th District office at 215-686-3063 to ensure a prompt response." |

The ages listed for both boys was 18. Not sure if they're still in school or just dropouts. Either way - over the next month - I guarantee you that a 911 call in NL will generate a swift response from the police. They have a rather ill view of one of their own getting shot/run over by the baddies. |

Lutton that's a great idea about Zagori's Also maybe Tower would donate the space that their offices are in, since the crime is effecting their properties now. I agree about Finnegans and also McFaddens. Cescaphe is so busy now that I have a feeling that wouldn't work very well, unless it was held on a weekday night. |

Well, I can tell you where at least one cop was when that incident happened at 3rd and Poplar. He was at Delaware Ave. and Spring Garden giving me a ticket for turning when the arrow was red. Don't you hate it when that happens? I don't mind paying the fine, but oh, those points!! After all these years, I got my very first ticket - nothing to be proud of, but a reminder not to turn on that red arrow. Mary Dankanis |

Mary - that's my least favorite intersection. I've complained previously about that turn arrow. Why can't there be two left turn lanes. One for only left turns and one for left turns/straight. That light is furiously long and I have seen numerous folks either turn on red or turn from the straight lane (I'm guilty btw of having done that). If Matt gets in office, I know that'll be in my top ten of what I want addressed (right behind lower crime, less guns on the street, more post school activities for the "you-ts", more plowing in the winter, more recycling, no more 10 yr tax abatements, a chicken in every pot, ...). |

Mr. Murphy, I know Officer Glovacz sister (she's lives in Phoenix). She flew in late last night to Philadelphia...she said the doctors are not sure YET if his leg will be saved. From other articles that I have read that was the most serious of the injuries. I will be talking with her tonight. I know her mom, her sister and I think that there is another brother that live in and around Philly. Officer Glovacz is married and has a 13 year old son and 15 year old daughter. Thanks. Pennagirl (I'm from near Gettysburg) I found your blog doing a google search on my friend's brother. |

david murphy: i think having an event for officer glovacz is a great idea! lori: thank you for letting us know how officer glovacz is doing. your posts helped me connect with the recent events. i have to confess that i have been going about these past few days as if nothing had happened. i suppose that i've become numb to crime -- one of the unfortunate side-effects of having spent a lifetime living in cities. after all, these things happen, don't they? the event didn't impact me personally, and it didn't involve anyone I know -- just something that happened between some kids and some cops, right? of course, officer glovacz isn't just "some cop." as you made me realize, he is a husband, a father, a brother, and a friend. if you don't mind, please continue to let us know how he progresses. officer glovacz: i was sorry to hear about what happened to you. no one should have to go through what you're going through now. thank you for your brave service -- not just for the other day, but for your 11 years serving the 26th district. be strong, and get well soon! |

I just spoke with Officer Glovacz's sister. Out of respect and want of privacy I cannot give too many details, other than he does face more surgeries and long recovery. The doctors are trying to keep the leg from getting infected, he's out of ICU. But infection is the worst enemy that he faces still. If have furnished her (his sister) with this website and when she gets back home she will look it up. I know the family appreciates the prayers and concerns of everyone (Arizona, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, etc). I would like to say that the city of Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Police Department and the communities group such as yours needs to be commended for your support of Officer Glovacz and the other officers involved in this incident. The Department has given wonderful support to the family of Officer Glovacz. The community has not condemned the officers (unlike the city I live in, Minneapolis) involved. Way to go Philly!! Get well Officer Glovacz! Pennagirl |

I know that the NLNA is looking at various options for some sort of neighborhood fundraising...but we need to make sure that we are working in conjunction with other groups like the FOP to keep things well organized. We certainly don't want to run anything fly by night. I know we can count on many individuals and businesses in the neighborhood once we know the best way to help. One thing that has been pointed out to me is that many police officers, fire fighters, etc work a great deal of overtime, which contributes to their bottom line. Plus many guys have a part-time gig on the side: painting, drywalling, lawn care, etc. So it's not just the loss of the base salary a family like this potentially faces, it's all that other work too. Plus the kids, 13 & 15, will soon be looking at college opportunities, and I'd hate for them to be limited financially because of this incident. So while I'm sure that there is a need to help, we want to find out how we can maximize our efforts. |

from 6abc.com: Injured Officer Ready To Go Home By Chad Pradelli March 9, 2007 - Just doing wiggling his toes at one point never seemed possible for Officer Joe Glovacz. "I felt the bone come through the skin. I knew what happened right then and there," he said. It was two weeks ago when Officer Glovacz and other officers were arresting 17-year-old robbery suspect Wendell Hudson in Northern Liberties. As Hudson sat in a police cruiser, his brother, Lydell Hudson, allegedly turned on the ignition in a Dodge Intepid, floored it and ran into several officers. The car crushed Glovacz's leg. The bone ripped open a gaping wound from his ankle to his knee. "I knew how bad it was just from the pain and the pressure," he said. His partner of 9 years, Officer Joe Ruff, managed to dive out the way. He rushed to the side his best friend, who lay screaming on the ground. "I wanted to keep him from looking down. He was probably calmer than half of us out there. It's a credit to him," said Ruff. "It always pops in my mind. Sometimes it replays, but I'm trying to deal with it and get through that and get back to my life," said Glovacz. After 5 surgeries, doctors said Glovacz will make a full recovery, but also note he's very lucky. Glovacz credits his friends, fellow officers and family, especially his wife Kelly for helping him through the ordeal. "I love my wife so much; just glad she's there for me," he said. There's still pain, but he has some movement. Glovacz will walk with a cane for months, maybe years. He knows it's a long road, but he's just thankful to be going home. |
