City Council vote 17-0 to put casino referendum on May ballot

Wow!

This is great news. While some will say that this matter ultimately lies with the state legislature and the courts (and they're probably right) and this vote is more symbolic than decisive, it is important to note the complete circumstances.

After the 2:00 AM payraise, after pay-to-play, after the results of the November elections at the federal level and in towns, cities and states across the nation, with the number of candidates with support and stature running against councilmembers, City Council seems to have noticed that people--citizens--are their bosses. That they have to answer to us for the policies they support, the interests they favor, and the results of their voting.

If this were a no brainer, and what city council did today, and what the voters will do in May doesn't matter, then Richard Sprauge wouldn't be getting our petitions thrown out. At all levels of government, there is a new respect for listening to what the people want, instead of just deciding what is best for them.

I believe that this vote in city council has resulted from that new respect, and that the casino interest fear that the state legislature and the courts will grant us our conscience: that if so many Philadelphians have worked so hard to get this referendum on the ballot, and if citywide we vote overwhelmingly to restrict the locales of casinos in our city, that we have both the right and standing to do so.

This is people-powered politics. This is the people reclaiming the power of their vote, and their voices.

Definately good. When citizens stand together and voice concerns positive change is possilbe.
