It is our hope that this can become a place to discuss the comings and goings of our neighborhood; a forum to dialogue about the events and affairs that shape our common future and a platform for us to reaffirm our love for this community.

Liberty Lands news and listserv
This an invitation to join the new Liberty Lands listserv, where I'll send messages about events, meetings, and other information. You can subscribe by sending a message to liberty_lands-subscribe@yahoogroups.com Quick Liberty Lands news: -- the movie schedule is out! Movies will be on Tuesday nights this summer, starting in mid-June. The full schedule is on a message on the liberty_lands@yahoogroups.com site (and also posted on a message on this forum). -- first big event at the park this season will be our June 2 music festival. -- MAY 5 will be the plant sale. Volunteers are always needed. Avid gardeners – we welcome your donations of divided perennials to sell: contact me (Janetfinegar@msn.com) to let me know if you have plants. -- we've contracted to have trash picked up at the park on Mondays by a private hauler (in addition to the city pickup on Fridays). We hope that this will make a big difference to the amount of trash at the park and improve everyone's experience. -- PLEASE help with the off-leash dog problem! If you see a dog off-leash, politely inform the person that it isn't allowed at the park (and let them know about the free, legal dog park at Orianna and Poplar). Roaming dogs can be a hazard to themselves, to leashed dogs, and to people – and it's simply the park rule. Owners of leashed dogs should be aware of their surroundings while at the park -- there was a biting incident last month involving a toddler on the swings and a leashed dog. I know that even my child-friendly dog gets excited by the movement of the swings and of kids. In most cases, it's safer to tie your dog away from the playground equipment rather than tie or hold her near it. -- contact me (janetfinegar@msn.com) if you are planning a party or other gathering at the park so that I can put your event on the calendar (and let you know if anything else is scheduled for then). Ideally, there will be a web version of the calendar on the NLNA.org website within the next few months. -- finally, if you're interested in being involved in park management and planning, plan to come to one of the monthly steering committee meetings (held on the second Tuesdays of each month, at 7 p.m, at the NLNA office 733 N. 2nd) Janet |

A reminder (from the NLNA email list): "LIBERTY LANDS WORK DAY DATE: SATURDAY, APRIL 21 TIME: 10AM-2 PM LOCATION: LIBERTY LANDS PARK - 3RD AND WILDEY Nothin' like a Nor'easter to make you think about gardening! But the weather will warm up by the end of the week -- just in time for our workday on Saturday. We'll be weeding and spreading woodchips in the areas outside the community garden, by the bakery wall, and in the garden paths. The community gardeners got a lot done at the March workday. . . let's get more done Saturday! There will be drinks and donuts...please bring a friend or neighbor to pitch in! Also, Saturday night is the fundraiser for the dog park and neighboring garden, Orianna Hill. It's the second annual Friends of Orianna Hill Park Beef & Beer benefit fundraiser, on Saturday, April 21, 2007 from 8-12pm at The Ukranian Club @ 847 N Franklin Street. Tickets will cost only $20, and all proceeds will go to support the dog park. There will be a live performance by the Northern Liberties Dance Band, as well as tunes by D.J. Captain Mike. Like last year, your $20 gets you a buffet (served at 8:30pm) featuring bottomless beef and vegetarian vittles, bottomless beer donated by YARDS, as well as a silent auction after the Band's 9pm set. For Tickets: (1) call 215-370-9903 or email beefandbeer@ mac.com, (2) buy tickets at the park, starting this Saturday during the workday, and every Sat. (10-12pm) and Sun. (12-2) between 3/31 and 4/15, or (3) ask any Park Board Member (http://www.oriannah ill.org/board. html). Support our park neighbors! See you Saturday". Ken |

So the music festival and flea market is scheduled for June 2nd, right? The only advertising I've seen is on the place mat at Honey's. I'd like to set up a table there, where can I sign up to reserve a spot? I don't want to haul all of my gypsy treasures out if no one is going to know about it. Also, perhaps we should spread the word a little? (Craigslist, flyers, etc?) I'd be willing to help out... |

Im hoping to start something like the B-Boy barbeque in Liberty Lands. Im in the middle of talks with both The Artists United and the promoters of The BBoy BBQ. I hope it all comes through, cuz Liberty Lands needs something like that. |

NLNA is using a Google calendar for their events - works pretty well, is quick to set-up and is free: www.google.com/calendar ... might be good as the LL listserv calendar too. |

LC After the crapola you've put up on this board why would anyone want to come to anything you have a hand in? You found the maiming of a Police Officer funny. When a resident of NL was beaten up you said "he got what he deserved because he was drunk" You also like to pull the race card. And yet you want to be involved in the community and taken seriously? Liberties lands is a positve place. POSITIVE. Something you are not. |

Heather - you should let it drift, all indications point towards someone trolling around the message board from NY: 130.81.11.166 a3-0-0-1730.dsl-rtr11.ny325.verizon-gni.net ... this is a last hop ping for LC, which is a DSL hub in New York, and DSL only goes so far so the computer is real close to that. For instance, this is my last hop: 68.86.208.62 po-90-ur01.fairmountave.pa.panjde.comcast.net -which looks to be on Fairmount Ave. somewhere. |

Yea, you guys have WAY too much time on your hands to track my ISP. Actually I DO live in Northern Liberties but work in New York. So why not get a life? Its actually pretty fun... And as for you Heather, shut your mouth for once. I'm actually involved with many community events, and so actions speak louder than words. My personal opinions aside, I will continue to help my neighborhood whether you agree or not. In fact your rant just motivated me to push even harder. |

It ain't that hard to track an IP, LC, particularly if you're confined to a desk like a working man like you should know. (Seriously though, I may have to do some 'commuting' to NYC in the near future, myself. How do you do it? I'm weighing my options. Timing, means and all aroudn logistics I'd be keen on.) Otherwise, I think the one thing you and I can agree on is that, "pregnancy emotions" aside, Heather's a bit out of line with her berating of people because the NL discussion board is not the NL Civil Defense coordination forum (hence more people will read a hipster/yuppie throwdown thread than a list of common sense tips on avoiding a car break in). |

Well I usually take the cheap way to NYC via the Chinatown bus. It's smelly, and the staff are irritating, but if you can look past that, its the cheapest way (just $20. round-trip) to NY. Greyhound is a bit pricier ($40. round-trip last time I checked) but cleaner. Another option is to take the Train to NY at 30th St. station. It's more expensive than taking the bus, but the fastest and most convenient way. When you're back and forth like me, the Chinatown bus is the best way to go. But if you're just going to NYC once in a while, it's probably better to go the more expensive route. |

See I can't do the Chinatown bus. They're schedule isn't all that reliable and if I'm doing the commuting thing I'll be on a schedule and don't want to waste my time needing to compensate for cheap unreliable commuting. Is Greyhound more reliable? I'd love to take Amtrak all the time, and maybe if my schedule is fixed enough I could do just that. However, I know some people have done the SEPTA to NJTransit hop at Trenton. You ever do that? Too much hassle? I think it may cost somewhere around Greyhound prices, but I haven't really done the budgets or anything. |

IP: 64.0.51.194 May 17th, 2007 - 3:12 PM |
Yeah I've heard of the NJ Transit hop too, but that is too much of a hassle. It's better to just take Greyhound then. Greyhound is on schedule 99.9% of the time. |

We use the SEPTA to NJT often. It's not bad, but the switch in Trenton can be a little hectic. Many times we do the half way thing, and drop off or pick up in Trenton if only one person is going to NYC or if we have a guest coming into town. I haven't taken a bus to NYC in about 15 years, so I don't know how the connections are at Port Authority anymore, but from NJ Transit trains, you can get the NYC 1,2,3,A,C,E subways, and LIRR at Penn Station NYC, and PATH to the Wall Street/WTC from Penn Station Newark. |

Thanks, Lutton. By hectic do you mean very narrow time margin to leap into your next train or you're stuck waiting forever, or do you mean it's just a really crowded bustling station? |

Enough. Somebody made a funny comment about me being pregnant. Its a pregnancy. Aside from not being able to eat much and being sleepy, I'm no differnt. My opinions are not charged because of the horomones. LC you and I have a line drawn in the sand so to speak. Cheesesteak I'm glad I'm the impalement of the week. Get over it. I checked out the whole bboy bbq and Liberties Lands is not really a good spot anyway. Honestly its not large enough. It would be a great thing to have here but Memorial Hall would be much better. There is a huge spoken word and grafiti art culture just here in Philly alone. It would be a great event. LC--its art and culture and unity. We helped with the Germantown Poetic Justice event last month. Artists such as Ursula Rucker and the Twin Poets were there. The whole event was just amazing. Positive, uplifting, and insprational. You have portrayed yourself as a negative person with mad racial issues. What is your real reason for wanting to bring BBoy BBQ to NL? Seriously Liberties Lands is not a good location. Memorial Hall is huge and open and would accomidate a much larger crowd. Don't bring Bboy to Philly because you have some point you are trying to make or you want to look good--do it for the spoken word and graffiti artists who deserve recognition for their work. Do it for the kids who were never told that yes, they really are artists and they have a future in art. But do it right LC. It isn't about you. |

BBoy BBQ is already on in Philly. Don't know what sort of "talks" LC is in with the organizers, but they had a place announced on the 15th (which means it was probably nailed down well before hand). Of course LC says something "like" BBoy BBQ, so no one can call him a liar. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=76916118 |

do you mean very narrow time margin to leap into your next train or you're stuck waiting forever, or do you mean it's just a really crowded bustling station? either or both, depending on your first train being on time, and if it's rush hour Of course sometimes it flows just fine. |

i'll weigh in on the new york thing - i travel there ~2 times a week... SEPTA to NJT during rush hour... Chinatown bus off rush hour & weekends. it's really more reliable when you don't have to worry about them being held up in an hour of traffic going into the holland tunnel! late-night travel, sad to say and hate to do, but i drive. just drove back this morning at about 4am. if the trains and buses did run at that time, i probably wouldn't feel safe getting on them. amtraks on special occasions, one-way only, when i have a time-sensitive commitment in nyc. then i take local trains back. i really dream of one day an i-95 that either A: connects to the penna tpk without hassle or B: takes a more logical and direct path to NYC. there is no good way to drive. |

I-95 will be connected to the PA turnpike, but who knows when construction will be done? http://www.paturnpikei95.com/home.htm Currently, we cross the Betsy Ross Bridge and head down NJ 73 to get on the NJ Turnpike at exit 4. That's probably the most efficent way from center city. |

Isn't there plans for a NJ Transit train direct from Penn Station to 30th St somewhere down the pike? Or was I just hearing a rumor? Of course, somewhere down the pike probably means 5-10 years. |

i'm sooo off the original topic but i was curious about the wee-hour amtraks so ended up booking the super-cheap 3am amtrak home from nyc this morning ($45). i might go that route again if i'm super-tired and don't feel like dealing with nyc tunnel traffic/parking but i didn't really like the amtrak experience. first, a bum followed me for 5 minutes around penn station trying to get me to buy him a coffee. he smelled like ***** on the train, the stop announcements were pretty quiet (either that or i was REALLY passed out) but i barely woke up in time for the phila stop. once back at 30th, getting a cab proved tougher than i anticipated at 5am. no cabs @ cab stand. wait 5 mins. first guy won't take a credit card. there were some nasty exchanges as i was freakin tired and cranky and why install the cc machines if they won't let you use them? yellow cab co #3177, you are an ass. wait 5 mins. a second cab is hesitant to let me use a credit card, but ultimately agrees. |

That's surprising, but I've heard a number of people with the same issues about cab's and the credit card machines at the airport at all hours. I've also heard about the machines just not working. For what it's worth, from what I understand the system to handle credit card transactions handed down to the cabbies is an instance of old style Philly machine politics and friends of Philly pols making an easy money grab. That said, weird how there were no cabs at 30th. You'd figure the train station would be a hangout for cabs around 5 a.m. since where are people going to come out of at that hour besides the scheduled trainstops. Anyway, I've taken wee hour amtrak and I believe the announcements are intentionally muffled, does increase the risk of sleeping through your stop (I ask the conductor what time they think they'll be pulling in and set my cell phone's alarm clock to wake me up about ten minutes before hand ... I think alarm clock's are against the rules, and I'm generally a good doobie about sound policies in transit, but I think breaking the policy to avoid missing my stop is the greater self-centered good). |
brynn
IP: 68.32.40.193 May 24th, 2007 - 6:43 PM |
yeah, i've read the cabbie arguements about how they have to pay the cab co at the end of each day and how the credit card transactions don't come through til several days later, but.... frankly, i don't care. i'm out cash for work expenses all the time, and i live without it til i submit my expense report at the end of the month. that shouldn't be made the customer's problem. especially at 5am the day before payday and the ATM's rejected you and the 2 hours you slept on the amtrak was the first sleep you've had in 5 days. but maybe i am just bitter.
