It is our hope that this can become a place to discuss the comings and goings of our neighborhood; a forum to dialogue about the events and affairs that shape our common future and a platform for us to reaffirm our love for this community.

What is wrong with dog owners here?
I've seen two different dog walkers allowing their dogs to urinate on the sand/recycling bins along the Arbol cafe fence on the northwest corner of Poplar and 2nd. There are frequently dog feces dropped and smeared along the narrow path along the east side of 2nd St between Brown and Poplar where chainlink fences overhang the sidewalk. So happy I'm moving in a few weeks. |

I am trying to figure out why it matters where a dog takes a leak. As for the doo doo, I'm sure you won't find doggie doo wherever you're moving to. Good luck with that one, hahahahaha. |

I am nominating "seriously" for the most worthless posting of the day and unless Liberty City or Coulter want to add their contribution...I am pretty sure it's a lock. |

Mike, you really need to get over yourself. If anybody thinks dogs don't poop in other parts of the city, they're wrong. |

How is it OK for dogs to urinate/defecate on the property of a business that sells food? Would the dog owners be willing to do this if the business owner was standing there?

It helps not to make broad generalizations about "dog owners", those that are irresponsible are few and far between - albeit such a visible and unsightly nuisance - though, in Northern Liberties, take all the dog poop and pee magically away, then I would challenge you to find a pristine patch of sidewalk - not marred by cracks, gaping holes, litter, gum, or blocked off for construction... then see how far you could walk on said sidewalk without seeing some filthy person coughing out a glob of spit. I'm not condoning the non-poop cleaners, just pointing out that the poop is a justr a symptom of the disease. |

"I'm moving to suburbia for work, so I'll be walking to and from my car, rather than on filthy sidewalks." Gosh. Maybe you could get someone to carry you to your car. Goodbye!! |

I'm from the suburbs. Our sidewalks are indeed spotless - its our front lawns that the dogs urinate and defecate on. |

i share the original poster's frustration. cambridge between 6th and Randolph is a minefield with all different sized craps, gathering flies in the heat. it's disgusting and unneccessary. generally, suburban areas don't have poop on the sidewalk because dogs go to the bathroom on people's lawns. one difference between cracks and other sidewalk defects is that they are the result of wear and tear, whereas dog poop is the result of someone's laziness and disrespect for others. for those that dismiss complaints about dog poop on sidewalks as whiny, not important, or whatever, i can't wait until you walk down a poorly lit sidewalk, on a wet, rainy day, in a rush because you're running late, only to step in the wettest, freshest pile of crap in your favorite shoes. |

Put some peanut butter on the crap. Chances are the same dog will come along and eat the **** and mortify the owners into making sure they pick up their dogs droppings and probably everyone elses. I heard that some park rangers did this and it changed the owners behaviors. |

I agree with JLC. I am a dog owner and I always clean my dogs poop. The urination part is a little harder. I try to get them to go on bushes but it is hard. As soon as they are outside they want to let it out. What I find extrmeley frustrating is that when I am doing the right thing by picking up poop, right next to my dog's poop is the poop of other dogs and tons of garbage. If I take the time to clean my dog's mess, why can't others take the time to not litter. It is extrmely frustrating.

when I pick up my dog's mess I make it a point to try and grab any trash I see at the time as well as pick up any other dog mess left behind by someone else... be pro-active and maybe the message will spread. if not, at least you are doing above and beyond your part. |

How about countless unfinished building projects in the neighborhood, pot hole and depresions on evry street caused by the construction of the unfinished buildings; Nails covering the streets from yes you guessed it these wonderful construction projects. @nd street looks like a demilitarised zone. Trash everywhere, Horrible economy, gas prices , wars for no apparent reason, earthquakes swallowing entire cities, Tidal wave destroying entire countries, but this **** and urine problem really ices the cake. |

Uh, maybe because unlike war, economic downturn, poorly timed real estate development ventures, etc. dog mess is a relatively simple quality of life problem with a simple solution: clean up after your dog. See the difference, cc? |

Perfectly stated, Cheese. There's a word for these crap leaving dog-owners... SCUMBAGS. In my part of the neighborhood, Randolph St., we have a large population of Scumbag dog owners. Don't keep a dog if you can't handle the responsibility of owning a dog. Dog owners that don't scoop should look into having a different pet--one that requires less effort and responsibility. Buy a cat, a fish, a hamster, etc. |

"When animal waste is left on the ground, rainwater or melting snow washes the pet waste into our storm drains or directly into our local creeks. The disease-causing bacteria found in pet waste eventually flows from our local waterways into the delaware and schuylkill rivers, our drinking water source. In addition to contaminating waterways with disease carrying bacteria, animal waste acts like a fertilizer in the water, just as it does on land. This promotes excessive aquatic plant growth that can choke waterways and promote algae blooms, robbing the water of vital oxygen." taken from A homeowners guide to stormwater management by PGW |

Can we have 10 Potts clones? Finally someone proactive and responsible (as far as poo is concerned) I understand that it's difficult to tell a dog where to pee, I'll concede to that. But, when it comes to crapping on the sidewalk or in the grass, it is the owner's responsibility (which they knew when they got the dog), to pick it up, and place it in their own trash receptacle. If you can't handle that, don't get a dog. The attitude of "there are cracked sidewalks, unfinished buildings, and trash in the streets, what's the big deal if I leave excrement around?" is appalling. You're part of the PROBLEM and only making it worse! Just because there are things around that we don't like doesn't mean we have the right to add to them. I don't take the kitty litter and dump it in the street because there's a pothole there.

pop pop - my house is one of the four alongside the minefield stretch on cambridge you mention. i've witnessed the culprit in action but for various reasons wasn't in a position to confront him - but i can describe him to you: he's a white guy with dark hair and a very wide, angry, mean face, sometimes a pencil-thin goatee. he has a big dog, i don't really know enough to tell what type for sure but i know it's a mix. i can't tell you how many times i've cleaned up his dog ****. while i'm not particularly annoyed by it (i just shovel it in with the rest of the litter) i do get a sick kick out of uncomfortably confronting people and i promise next time i catch him so long as i'm not freshly out of the shower i will either 1: confront him or 2: at least snap his picture. it's the least i can do.

I have seen the guy your talking about Brynn, he doesn't look like the type to have a friendly little chat with. Maybe just bag it up and leave it on his door step with a note saying his dog droped something on the sidewalk and he might want it back. |

brynn, paintedsoldier, myself and any other peeps near the randolph/cambridge intersection should give out fake tickets for dog crap violators like that south park where the hybrid driver tickets non-hybrid drivers for excessive pollution. i haven't seen the goateed squinty guy you describe brynn, but i do see evidence of his dog nearly every time i walk down cambridge to 6th, it bothers me just walking by it, so i can imagine how frustrating it must be to have it right outside your place. inexcusable laziness and inconsideration. |

Is that who lets a dog crap all over the parking lot and alley that I like to cut through to the train? If it was actually a yard, then go for it, but it's public property and I've never seen the guy scooping, just making sure his dog doesn't get run over

While we are calling people out.... Attn: Male Liberties Walk Resident with the White Boxer (named Jasper), It is not OK that you NEVER pick up after your dog. Stop letting him/her crap all over the sidewalks or by the horse stables while you look busy with your blackberry. |

Why not mix rat poison with peanut butter and leave it on the sh*t? Force these pigs to watch their dogs convulse and die. |

IP: 198.137.214.33 May 21st, 2008 - 3:30 PM |
Great idea, JJ! But why don't we just shoot the dog in front of the owner and when the owner finished watching dog die, execute the owner to prevent him from buying another dog and repeating this heinous offence. And then we can kill his family and then burn down his house. That seems appropriate. Or maybe shoot any dog that is not morbidly constipated. You know, before he "strikes"! JJ, please, let me know when you can see how ridiculous your post is, OK? And then go get some counseling before you become a true menace. |

Brian thats a little over the top to go shooting the dog. Just shoot the owner, its not the dogs fault. And the Cambridge guy i believe lives on 6th, thats where i see him walking from. |
