wine stores other than one on girard?
Happy Monday, I know this is going to sound incredibly snobbish, but hey, I lived in central VA for 2 and a half years and got hooked on wine. I also enjoyed buying 6- and 12-packs at the market, but being from MA, that's another issue I'm already used to and can deal with. Anyway, The packie on Girard and Germantown has a lackluster wine selection, plus I'm not sure if a store selling both wine and mad dog should be considered trustworthy. So, where can I find a semi-decent wine store around here? I'm surprised NL doesn't have a "beverage store" that's a little more upscale (yet).Additionally, are there any local wineries you message board peeps would recommend? |

In my opinion, you have to go to Jersey. There are two places I like: Moore Brothers http://www.wineaccess.com/splash/moorebros/new_splash.html Total Wine http://www.totalwine.com/StoreList.aspx?state=NJ&store=301 Here's a story about local vintage: http://www.philly.com/philly/restaurants/20080410_A_wow_of_a_Penna__wine.html |

Although some PA Wine Stores are better than others, they are all run by the goverment, hence, nothing close to what you could get where you came from. I haven't had a PA wine that impressed me. If you want great wine, head to Moore Brothers in NJ. Excellent French and Italian options. |

...in the Jerz. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=l&hl=en&geocode=&q=Kress+Wine&near=Haddonfield,+NJ&ie=UTF8&ll=39.895382,-75.024219&spn=0.011293,0.021844&z=16&iwloc=A 1 Berlin Rd Cherry Hill, NJ (856) 428-5200 Knowledgeable staff and a great selection from around the world. Not too far out of the way from Canal's on Route 38 either, also a decent wine selection and plenty of beers (cheapest beer around IMO). |

Try the state store on Columbus just before you get to Lowes. State Liquor Store (215) 271-1908 1940 S Columbus Blvd Philadelphia, PA They have a premium wine cave and it's much bigger. Also, keep in mind that the State Stores buy for the ENTIRE state. They have a considerable amount of purchase power and some fab deals can be found. Check out the Chairmans Select wines. That being said...I do go to Total Wine and Beverages when in the area but with gas prices and tolls your better off buying local. j |

Just received this in my email from Moore Brothers. Seems like an opportune time for you to check it out. I can't recommend the store enough. I second the state store on Columbus Blvd in South philly. If you have to buy in Pennsy, this is a decent place, with a decent amount of Chairman's selection wines. Otherwise, a trip to jersey is worth it - especially if you are gassing up your car as well. |

Whenever I've been to Sonoma, Napa, etc., the folks working the tasting bars are always thrilled to hear we're from Philly, apparently the PA Liquor board is very receptive to consumer demand regarding wines selection. That said, if I'm planning on dropping more than $100 on a liquor stocking trip, I also tend to cross the bridge, though I'm paranoid about (among other things) the stake-outs so I tend to make my pick up further North on my way back from NYC. Not a store rec. but if the original poster wants to keep his/her wine snobbery up, if you haven't heard of it, I'd recommend signing up for The Juice. A mostly wine, but also beer and spirits events calendar: http://www.localwineevents.com/be_notified.php I somehow wound up on this after buying tickets to the Friday tastings at Panorama, which is something else you ought to check out if you haven't done so (or just check out the winebar when they're not doing a tasting, it's just cool how much they have there and how knowledgeable their staff is): http://www.pennsviewhotel.com/ristorante_panorama/index.aspx |

i must add...we went to the wine expo thing on saturday at the convention center (tix were comped by our liquor rep, though - but after going this year, next year i would even pay full price!!!!) and it was GREAT. Favorite was Silver Oak cab, although the highlight of the night was the Krug champagne and oyster bar (courtesy of Oceanaire). I even spit in the bucket, whihc I NEVER DO:-) I highly reccomend wine lovers attending next year - SO WORTH IT!!!!!!! |
