How do I know a contractor is licensed & insured?
I need to verify that a contractor is licensed and insured. Is there a resource out there that will give me this info? |

Ask for the contractor to provide a certificate of insurance and a copy of the license. |

Ask the contractor to have his/her insurance company register you as a certificate holder. If the contractor’s insurance is cancelled you will be notified by the insurance company. If you are getting a grant or borrowing money from the city the contractor will have to be licenced by the city. Generally, I think the only contractors needing a licence are plumbers and electricians. Anyway, just ask them to show you their licence. Any honorable contractor would be glad to do this. |

That information is on file with L & I. If you go to http://webapps.phila.gov/li/ and click on "Overview" under the "Resources" category, you will find a link for "Licensed Contractors." But even if a company is listed, doesn't mean it's ethical or competent. Moneer Farhat's Philadelphia Building Group was listed even after L & I assured me they'd been shut down . . . Debbie |
