It is our hope that this can become a place to discuss the comings and goings of our neighborhood; a forum to dialogue about the events and affairs that shape our common future and a platform for us to reaffirm our love for this community.

FYI: Another Attempted Break-In
Someone attempted to break into my house today around 1:20 PM. They removed a screen from the first floor window and somehow opened the window (which I would swear was locked - but I have to ask the cleaning lady about this). Our alarm went off and seemed to scare off the scumbag before he could enter. The police arrived in a timely manner. Advice: if you don't have a security system, dog, or bars on the windows, get them. Northern Liberties is a hot pocket for scumbags these days. |

Unfortunately, it's 100% true. And I have no doubt that it was a burglary attempt. I forgot to mention the location. I live on 4th, about 40 yards south of Poplar. The window in question faces Leithgow St. It's that part of Leithgow that is rather desolate, if you even know it exists. |

This happened Tuesday at my house on 5th street. The perp scaled an 8' fence. When the pathetic low-life could not get in (dawg and alarm) he stole my bike in my rear yard and exited with the bike over the same fence. This guy has got a serious itch for burglary. Hopefully the cops (or an angry mob) can catch him soon. |

I know that Cptn. Korn issued a statement regarding two burglaries either last week or the week before. Now if the problem is on both sides of poplar I am not sure if the 26th is aware of what's happened on the other side or vice versa. The trouble with crime and safety concerns with NL is that there is no one central media for information. There is a message board, a neighborhood association, a list-serve for town watch and of course 2 paper publications. Why there isn't someone who can go to areas of concern, pass out information, and have a central means of giving out crime and safety info I don't know. Anyone? |

with all these recent attempted and successful break-ins I think I may have used up my luck for the year having been out of town for two weeks and apparently not filling out the stop mail form correctly. My house was begging to be broken into |

Break-ins aren't new to NLs. Get an alarm, lock doors and windows, this is city life. |

oddly enough unlocked doors and open windows are a huge contributing factor to break-in's. The people who break in to your home usually are not walking along and decide "hey this looks like a good spot to hit" They case the area--familiarize themselves with schedules, who lives where and so on. I keep mentioning the show "it takes a thief" Watch it. Learn from it. Take basic measures to secure your homes. There are many mistakes we make that we aren't even aware of that make breaking in to our homes easy. |

Brian, Sorry to hear that. Glad to hear everyone is alright. At least it was during the day. I would FREAK if someone broke into my house while I was home in the evening. |

Thanks all. Actually, I get a rare work from home jawn tomorrow (donanting some furniture and have to await the pick up). I kind of wish I were home for the stunt. I think the scumbag might have found that somewhat interesting. I should say that there is work being done in the houses on both sides of my house, so it's not like there were tumbleweeds blowing down the street. Also, the window the scumbag tried has a large ADT sign on it. DUH! I think my next step is to install some flower boxes under the windows and plant some large thorny plants. I really don't want to put bars up, but then again, I really don't feel like thinking about this while I'm away or my girlfriend is home alone. I'd hate to overreact, but I knew it was only a matter of time until some hamhead tried this. And while I'm here, Go Flyers! Go Phillies! |

Potts A$$...thanks for wishing I'm next up on the robbery circuit. Nice senitment. For the record I have had my house robbed and I've been mugged @ gunpoint in this neighborhood. But, all of this happened 10+ years ago. From my perspective this neighborhood has gotten considerably safer in the last 10 years but no one would ever know that if you listen to this message board. My point is that crime happens and it's not just happening here and it's not just getting worse all of a sudden. |

Neighbor, I grew up in Fairmount and have never a.) been burgled, b.) mugged, or c.) heard shots nearly as often as I do here. Of course there was crime, but from my perspective, Northern Liberties today is much much worse. It might be better than it was 15 years ago, but who cares? It still sucks much more than one would expect even from city living. And I, of course, do not wish that you or anyone on this board is next. I doubt that Potts was all that serious in his sentiments, but it was obviously inappropriate. |

Of course I wasn't serious in wishing neighbor gets robbed. They are however, an A$$. It's just a tad annoying on every serious post some tool needs to state how this "is city life" and blah blah blah. Who gives a crap if its a part of city life? That doesn't make the situation's impact to the person involved any less meaningful/upsetting. It provides no help whatsoever to point that out. We all live here and are aware of that. |

It isn't just city life it is life. This neighborhood wasn't some bucolic pasture free of crime until last year, that was my point. I'm tired of people bashing the area and posting as though we are in the middle of an unprecedented crime spree. Good thing we didn't have a message board in the '90's. |

I think we have this debate every summer... New residents say that there's an "unprecedented amount of crime." Old residents say "it's always been like this" or "it's worse now thanks to you people with nice things." In any case, who cares? It's unacceptable. As a community, we need to be doing more. Your neighbor's house was broken into. Thankfully, no one was hurt. |

Europa, neighbor: Please point to the post in this thread that bashes the neighborhood. Let's not go all "Liberty City" here. If you don't like reading reports of neighborhood crime, then don't read them. It's absurd for you consider these reports as bashing the neighborhood. They are factual and relevant, and neighbors are concerned and should be informed. There might be some "Chicklen Little" posts occasionally, but these are like that. You can attack those reactionary types of posts when appropriate. If you are suggesting that we should be inured to the crime, well then you are part of the problem. If you think that because crime has gotten marginally better over a decade that we should be happy, well, that's just fatuous. |

I understand what neighbor is saying, Brian. You even said, "Northern Liberties is a hot pocket for scumbags these days." I think (please correct me if I'm wrong, neighbor) neighbor's point is that this is not because you live in NL. Crime happens everywhere. It is unacceptable everywhere, but, at times, folks seems to start comparing us to other neighborhoods (like you did later in the thread, comparing your time in Fairmount to your time in NL), and coming up with the erroneous conclusion that it's more dangerous here. Criminals exist here, other parts of the city, and outside of the city. I think that's all neighbor was trying to say. Let's not conclude that our neighborhood is a hotbed for crime if it isn't. Personally, I think it's a fair comment. These crimes are unacceptable, but they're not isolated to our area. It's no better to be robbed elsewhere, but let's not say NL = crime. |

Yes, of course crime happens everywhere, but before we pat ourselves on the back and say "I'm OK, You're OK", it think we have to admit that Northern Liberties has more crime than it should. Much more. It's not as bad as Olney, but it's not as good as Society Hill, either (when properly statistically adjusted). And why shouldn't we reference other neighborhoods? I think putting it in context is EXACTLY what we should do. Keeping things out of context is precisely reactionary. Now one might argue that there are no more crime than average, but because of things like this bulletin board, incidents are blown out of proportion. I would disagree to a large extent. We had no neighborhood bulletin board when I grew up, but we didn't need one. I knew everyone in the neighborhood (just about), as did everyone, so if crime happened, the word spread fast. This is just a fact: there are indeed way more non-violent crimes here. This thread has become obvious and tedious. I don't think I can comment any more than reiterating my original message: Protect yourself appropriately. Good luck. |

Theft from auto is a problem citywide. Burglaries are an increasing problem citywide. Unattended delinquent kids are all over the city. That said I think there is probably one slick crook responsible for the bulk of these unsolved burglaries. I think that for every jerk arrested for theft from auto there are droves more to replace him/her. And if despite knowledge of a problem on SEPTA it took tragedy and a media blitz to put the kids in check get ready for a summer of fun with the punks in NL. My honest opinion of crime in NL is that the lack of direction regarding crime and safety probably contributes to events. There is a lot of organized direction for other things which is part of what makes NL so unique. I"m not being mean here but my honest opinion is there is a collective brain fart when it comes to giving direction to dealing with crime and safety concerns. Having the police come to a meeting is great but if the information isn't passed along so it reaches more than just people on a list serve it isn't helping as much as it could. When there is a pattern of crime-ie multiple theft from auto in the same area, a person should contact the proper precinct, post info on a central crime and safety link from the NLNA website and this message board, and go to that area and attempt to speak with as many residents as possible about the problem, and put information on parked cars. The groundwork is there, the right people have to put it in motion. There has to be somebody motivated enough to do this. Anyway I'm off to do more beer research, call breweries, and try to get some cool free stuff from different booze places and work on the bartenders schedules. fun |
