700 block N. 5th - I need your input

Hi,

I can't understand why they still have that "No Parking Monday through Friday" sign up on the west side of 5th Street, in the 700 block. When there was an active business there it made sense, because of the large trucks going in and out, but now that it's residential I feel that sign should be removed.

Although I don't live on that block, I have a vested interest, and would like to know how the residents feel about getting that sign removed. I'll be glad to begin the process (which is probably quite lengthy) but want to know if there are any advantages to having it remain. I don't want to start a campaign if there's a good reason for having the sign there.

Please let me know how you feel about this - I'll take my cue from you, the residents.

Re: 700 block N. 5th - I need your input

Hi Mary,

That is my block you are talking about and I did try to get it changed. When the building was under construction, being converted into apartments, I began...calls, emails, all I ever got was that they were looking into it. I gave up after about two years. It was just me trying so maybe if there are more people requesting it....
The only reason I can think that it might remain, other than no one cares (in the streets dept.), is that the owners might use it as a selling point for the self storage.
I will be happy to help if you start the process again.

Thanks for your response, Erika. I was hoping to hear from more residents but apparently there isn't enough interest in this subject to pursue it further.

The other thing that I find annoying is why there are "No Parking" signs just above Brown, on the lefthand side. However, I really can't write any letters on this topic, since I don't live there and most residents don't seem to care.

I live around the corner on Olive St. If I recall when the Lance Silver was seeking approval for the loft project he said he would have those signs removed. Aren't some of them painted over with yellow paint. Have people been getting tickets there?

Mary - I live in the building in question and it really is annoying. There is no good reason at all for that to be no parking. I could get at least a half dozen signatures on a letter for you. How many resident sigs are needed to change it?

The signs need to be changed anyway - some are vandalized.

Re: 700 block N. 5th - I need your input

Thanks - you've given me the impetous (sp) to go forward. I know it takes a long time for signage, but I'll keep you posted and let you know what has to be done.

It took a whole year to get the "No Parking" signs in front of St. Agnes-St. John's church at 4th and Brown so I know it's tedious, but I'll start the process and let you know what materialized.

Re: 700 block N. 5th - I need your input

Hi, I live in the building as well and it would be nice to be able to park there during the day. Most of the time we try to park on Brown, however it seems to be getting more and more crowded and the gated parking lot is almost at full capacity. We keep one lot space however it would be nice to give it up if there were ample parking. Thanks for your help.

Re: 700 block N. 5th - I need your input

I once tried to get the city to remove a Handicapped Parking sign that stood in front of an empty neighbor's house who died the year before. I called the Streets Dept and requested the sign be removed. The nice lady gave me a "Work Order Number" and told me they would probably get to it within the next 6 months. When I asked her what to do in the meantime, she said that I could take the sign itself down, and the city would remove the post when the work order came up.

That was a couple of years ago. I'm not even sure if the post is still up, but we all can park there now...

ps: I too will miss Elaine. I will post any plans for a memorial party that I hear of.

I also live in the Building in question, been there about 6 months, would love to see the spaces open, maybe put up a sign sheet in hall by the lift. i would sign, and so would my girl who circles the block at least 3 times a week. Thanks for asking the easy question.

Hi,

This is an update to tell you there's no update. My letter got slowly passed from department to department in the city, and finally landed on the desk of the Parking authority. They are taking this request "under consideration". I just wanted you to know I haven't forgotten about the signs - it's just a very slow process. 'll be sure to update you when there's some real information.

Thanks... My girlfriend got a ticket there a couple weeks ago for staying over past 7am...she doesn't have to be at work till eight. It is stupid, to waste good parking in a realativly safe location.

Re: 700 block N. 5th - I need your input

After much perseverence, letter writing and phone calls, the city finally "saw the light" and officially removed the "No Parking" sign in the 700 block of N. 5th Street. Mission partially accomplished, because now they've promised to check into the sign just north ofBrown, in the 800 block.
If anyone gets a ticket in the 700 block, you can call Linda Bradley from PPA (215-683-9735) because she's the one who was helpful in this endeavor.

You're welcome, Erika. Thanks but no thanks - I've already been there, done that for Northern Liberties for 15 happy years (and 15 out of 17 ain't bad!).
