N 3rd
Has anyone had a bad experience with the staff at N. 3rd lately? I love that place and I go there probably once a week, but last night our table had a question about the bill (we thought that we had been charged for some drinks that we didn't order) and the waitperson got really upset with us. It was really bizarre. Then they called the manager over and it turned into this whole big thing. Just curious if this was just a fluke or if anyone has experienced something similar. Not tryin' to knock the place, like I said I love it and have never, ever had anything like this happen before, but I am rethinking whether or not I want to keep frequenting... |

Good lord. Do we need to hear about it every time someone doesn't get a slice of lemon with their water? |

Puzzled, chill out. You said it yourself.... "like I said I love it and have never, ever had anything like this happen before". One slightly neg. experience out of many great ones and you want to start a thread about it. C'mon now. |

Well, if you don't like my thread, then don't respond to it and it will get moved to the bottom and you won't be able to see it anymore. I'm just tryin' to get feedback from others that's all, calm down. |

I love N 3rd and know all of the waitstaff. As a server, it can be upsetting to get accused of over-charging a guest when you did not. I am positive that the server informed the manager of the situation just to make sure that you were fine and left as a happy guest.

I've been going there a lot more than usual, and I have not noticed bad service lately. The service varies from average to very good. I don't think I've ever really had a negative experience there. I've had some very good servers. And some ok ones. But, it's rare when the food is not amazing. So glad I live half a block away. And out-of-town visitors are always bowled over by how great a place it is for food and drink. |

I've never had anythng less than a fantastic meal there. The service has always been great. My only complaint is that I know there are employees there with sticky fingers. Keep an eye on everything you bring with you - jackets, purses, etc. Otherwise it will disappear. |

Interesting about the sticky fingers. I "lost" a wallet there a few years back and figured a patron picked it up. I've had many many great meals at the place, but I've also had some not-so-great experiences, either food or service. It's not unheard of to have a bad time at a place that is usually stellar. |

The only good experiences I've had are at brunch -- where they don't crucify you for not ordering an alcoholic drink. Hell, last time I had dinner there I DID order a drink, but my girlfriend wasn't real hungry so she just got a salad. The waitress turned into an absolute ****** I've never been that impressed with the food, especially to put up with the repeatedly awful service. There are plenty of better places in the hood. |

I've never cared for N 3rd, but that's strictly a matter of taste call. Service, etc. have always been on the par or above the standard of the NL joints it's in most direct competition with. I do find it amusing that the original poster is basically saying, "I had a bad experience there. If people think the place stinks I'll stop going" implying the original poster will continue to go there if people still like it, regardless of the original poster's own experience. Everybody's places have an off night every now and then. Out of appreciation and loyalty to the place, most patrons will give a place another chance if their taste is invested in it in any way. If a pattern of dissappointment develops, or something particularly outrageous (having a mgr come in to resolve a billing dispute is not outrageous if the server thinks he or she is in the right, it's what the mgr is there for). Seriously, some of the "disappointed" threads often read "I had no idea the world worked this way, really" and part of me wishes a local animator would work up some "life lessons" for the board's readers, a la the "Knowing is Half the Battle" vignettes that ended episodes of G.I. Joe. |

Inregards to: "My only complaint is that I know there are employees there with sticky fingers. Keep an eye on everything you bring with you - jackets, purses, etc. Otherwise it will disappear." How can you possibly say this? Do you know someone who works there and admits to stealing? Have you actually witnessed the waitstaff steal something from a patron? If so, did you do something about it? I know over the years there have been purses stolen from patrons, and I am sure other things, but I highly doubt the staff is the culprit. Mark Bee (owner) and his brother (I believe) actually chased down a purse snatcher and caught him, continuing to hold him down until police arrived. He had been coming into N. 3rd and ganking purses when it was busy. If you're gonna say something like that, about a prised local business that has brought incredible amounts of good to the community, back it up with facts, anonymous internet poster man. |

If you want to leave your valuables all over the tables at N3rd or any restaurant, be my guest. But if you do "lose" something at N3rd, don't make the mistake of inquiring about it with any of the staff. You will understand what I'm talking about when it happens to you. |

i used to bartend in chestnut hill and on two different occassions, purses were stolen from the bar. no matter where you are, you need to keep your valuables close. it is so easy for someone to walk by, grab a purse, and walk out before anyone realizes what has happened. no one should accuse anyone of theft unless they have actual proof. as for N 3rd in particular, i have never had a bad experience here. every establishment is going to have an off night once in a while, but fortunately, i have yet to experience this here. i live for the bibb salad and the asian wings, they keep me coming back for more. oh..and the blue cheese dressing. i swear it has crack in it!

GF showed up and we went elsewhere. did not eat there for over 2 years as a result. |

@mex - ha, ha i LOVE n3rd. it's our neighborhood's little hidden gem, despite all the pimping of it i do on chowhound.com. let the masses flock to a certain brunch place a block over which, between... uh, i guess the internet and me, is not even in the same league as n3rd. (i did the french toast comparison) there are two servers there who i just love. we always hope we're in their section. never had a problem, billing or otherwise. |

They still do the "you'll have to leave if you're not eating" thing. They did it to us a few weeks ago. I understand why they do it, but it is a bit tactless. I've never gotten that treatment at Abbaye, Standard Tap, Bar Ferdinand, or Azure/Cantina, so it seems very out of place in the neighborhood. |

That Italian place south of N3rd, Il Cantucco?, has a similar seating policy. Emphasis on rapid turnover of tables. With N3rd, I can understand asking people waiting for company to wait for them at the bar area instead of seating them; but seating them and then getting antsy seems a bit ill thought out. |

il cantuccio fits what, all of 10 people? if you were just hanging out not eating and i had bills to pay and people waiting for the seat, i'd kick your ass out too! in the friendliest way possible of course. n3rd has much more space so it's a different story... if i had to guess i'd say that's the individual server ousting you and not the resto's policy (again just a guess). if the server's section isn't that big, and they've got a full house and they're calculating their wages based on an average amount per person and an average amount of people per shift (cause how do they know ahead of time if you're going to make it worth their while by tipping well or not) some of the less tactful ones might try to oust you. i hear this all the time from a friend who works as a server at a place in DC. erch. i'm sure that's the toughest call a resto/server has to make, customer satisfaction vs turning tables. we did this once, back in june, at n3rd - just hung out for ages. it was brunch on a sunday i think, and our food was ready to come out (outside) when it started pouring, so we moved to that server's section inside. we ate but then didn't want to leave because it was still pouring rain. so we ordered another round of mimosas. which turned into like four more rounds of mimosas, watching the storm, which got us talking about storm chasing i guess. which turned into walking home in the rain and buying non-refundable flights to kansas, departing nine days later. it was a pretty fantastic vacation. i'm not kidding. totally unsuspecting and unprepared, we even saw the formation of a tornado (if you remember back to june, it was the tornado that went on to kill some boy scouts in iowa). then we went on to spending the next week taking the advice of a couple margarita-dueling bartenders in kansas city, respectively, and visited both of their recommended midwestern destinations - mt sunflower in western kansas and devil's den in arkansas. so anyway i'll probably always have fond memories of n3rd. we left a really gigantic tip. |

well brynn I was tippping after every drink, that's why she was nice and the hostess was not .. cantuccio does not serve drinks so not an issue. funny part was they were not super busy nor was it a friday/thursday night and I spent more there than I ever have before sitting at the table by the kitichen. Guess what made me angry is i have seen people hang there for hours who were not just dinning. If you own a resturant you take a gamble that a person will order a lobster dinner or a salad. nice place good food, but an employee left a bad impression. In the unhip burbs last week I was waiting to see a friend play. nursed a drink do to DUI laws and distance 25 miles...not one words was said to me |

I know that I don't have to post after every meal I eat (I would be posting 7 times a day, hardy har har). But, just got back from North 3rd, and it was very satisfying as usual. I believe my waiter's name was Coello, and he was a good waiter. Had the crispy chicken sandwich and it was amazing, as usual. Now, back to my food nap. |

oh gawd, just talk to Mark yourself and get over it. posting on here like this is childish. your intent is to not go anymore if you get people backing you up? get a life, make up your own mind. I mean people get weird over money no matter where you go, such is life. we have had off nights at every restaurant we go to in the hood but the great nights outweigh the bad by far.

Hubby and I dropped in for a couple of pints and some nibbles earlier tonight. It was fine. Food was fine. Ate at the bar--no problems. I think this is what is happening in NL. Most of the people who bit*h and complain on this board are the people who seem to think that living in a hot area with insanely high rents entitles them to service with people dressed in white shirts with collars and ties, black pants, and long black apron. Lest these people forget that NL has done a very good job over the years of showing that very good food can be served by people in shorts and t-shirts being themselves--having good days or bad days. We eat and drink in NL because we want decent food in a unique setting that is easy going enough for me to show up in slippers. From time to time the service will be off, a mistake might be made and every now and then the food might be off. These things happen. |

Maybe 3-4 years ago 4 friends and I grabbed a table in the first room one evening... All seated feeling good... Drinks all around with more to follow... Halfway through the first round we were informed we had to give up the table because some recently arrived party wanted to eat... My party was just cut adrift from our cozy table, with no attempt or concern in providing alternate seating or some kind of compensation for our displacement... When I realized what was happening I expressed myself in a not so meek manner to the manager... Not being an out of control a-hole, just voicing a "old style" N.Liberty response to unjust tyranny... The mousy distraught manager responded by saying I would be "86'd" from the establishment... Nice huh...? I suggest 2nd St. Pizza for an unpretentious meal... |
