cool spots around south street?
Hey, Some friends and I are going to see the Hold Steady and Sonic Youth this Friday at the TLA. We're going to start hanging out around 5 before the show, and are looking for some suggestions on places to go. I don't make it down to South Street that much, but we're looking for a place to have a few beers and have a good time minus the crowds of dudes and dudettes slamming yeager bombs. Any suggestions? |

These days, there is really only one suitable place: Tattooed Mom's at 530 South St. The food is pretty good, too. http://www.myspace.com/tattooed_mom |

From 5 to showtime, you're probably not going to have much of a problem anywhere on South. The South Street Scene. doesn't start getting really annoying till 9 and later on a Friday night. Tattooed Mom is definitely the closest bar for what you want, it's like 2-3 blocks up on South. It will also be the bar that everyone else going to the show will stop into before heading over to the TLA. (Personally, I don't dig the food, or the place.) If you want something a bit more chill and a bit more off the South St. path, I'd head south to the Royal Tavern (good beer _and_ great food) or The Dive (good beer, but I think the menu is sort of a joke that stuck ... tv dinners and the like), next to each other on the 900ish block of E. Passyunk. There's also a pizza place I've never been to almost across the street from them that seems to do pretty steady business. It's a 15 minute walk tops from there to the TLA if that's in your range. |

I had a surprisingly good time at Many Brown's @ 5th and South. Read my review here |

you could always stop at skinners on market street on your way down. it's owned by the same guys that owned ministy so it's that same sort of vibe in there. |

Southwark is brilliant, and Coquette is not bad for a drink. Went there last night before Liz Phair. |

Michael, if you like Southwark and Coquette, you should definitely try Chick's Cafe on 7th. Really nice little place. |

Southwark is a-mazing if you have a little money to spend (worth it!). Also the Latest Dish on 4th between South and Bainbridge has a good bottled beer selection and really good food last I checked (last time I was there was 2 years ago and they've since hired a new head chef). |

New Wave Cafe on 3rd and Catherine (across from Dmitri's) has a really good beer selection, good food and a pretty relaxed environment. |

if you're into buying cd's and vinyl, the philadelphia record exchange is always a cool place to pop into, on 5th about 1 1/2 blocks south of south. |
