I have received some artefacts from a house clearance regarding a MISS GERTRUDE LILY TONGE Cubmaster of the Royal Commercial Travellers School Pack, Hatch End in Pinner Local Association Middlesex. Her warrant is dated 22 February 1935. I am hoping she also had a Hertfordshire connection as there is a Hertfordshire County Badge on one shoulder as well as a Middlesex Badge on the other. Gilwell were as always helpful but were unable to help fully. Is there anyone out there with information? The school has gone in the 1960s. Miss Tonge was almost certainly a teacher at the School as well as being Cubmaster as it was a "Closed Group" FRANK BRITTAIN Archivist, Hertfordshire Scouts. |

Re: archives
According to www.freebmd.org.uk there was a GERTRUDE LILY TONGE born in the Watford area in 1908. If this is the same person, then there could be a family connection with a group in that area? |

.... http://www.ualberta.ca/~btonge/RobinTonge.html suggests that this same woman had 8 siblings and was married in Watford in 1958 (she was 50) to WILLIAM BATTESON. |

Thankyou, that is most interesting. Can you help me follow this through? FRANK |

The update on Gertrude Lily Tonge is that thanks to adverts placed (including Milestones) information led me to meet up with her husband. She married Bill Batterson in Watford in 1958 at the age of 50. He recently moved to Chester and the subsequent clearence of his house revealed to artefacts. I made contact with Bill through his family in Chester and visited him about 2 weeks before he died aged 93. Along with many of his Scouting colleaques from the same Group, his ashes were scattered at the 1st South West Herts (Countess of Clarendon`s Own) Lord Hyde Campsite in Watford last year.
