1908 Scout Troops.
I am researching my forthcoming book 'The Dawn of the Scout Movement, 1908' There will be a chapter dedicated to 1908 groups at home and abroad. If you were, or still are, connected with a 1908 group I would be very pleased to hear from you. Colin

Re: 1908 Scout Troops.
Colin, Our district members tell stories of a visit by BP to St Alban's Church in Earsdon, nr Whitley Bay where he took 6 lads up to the top of the church tower and created the first patrol in our county (Northumberland) in 1908. They were known as the Seagull Patrol. My group is the descendant of that first patrol and our colours are the original scout colours - green and yellow. Unfortunately, the archives at Gilwell have no information about BP's visit and I would be interested to get any more information from any of the visitors to your excellent website! Yours in Scouting, Craig Gabbatiss SL 19th Whitley Bay (Earsdon) |

Re: 1908 Scout Troops.
On January 13th 1908 Gen. Baden-Powell made his first public appearance in Cheltenham. Addressing a large audience at the Town Hall he gave an illustrated talk entitled “The Art and Craft of Scouting”. Coupled with the publication two days later of the first part of “Scouting for Boys” this event undoubtedly was the spark which lit the campfires of scouting burning in our Town. Patrols undertaking the activities advocated by B-P met across the Town. The first Troop or group of Patrols meeting together is acknowledged to be the one which met at Highbury Congregational Church Hall in Grosvenor St. Mr Arthur Joseland of the Highbury Troop was the first man in Cheltenham to obtain a regular warrant as first-class Scoutmaster which recognised the completion of training. |

Re: 1908 Scout Troops.
Well my book, 'The Dawn of the World Scout Movement', was published to deadline- on Feb 22 1908, and by that time I had collected evidence of 380 1908 Scout troops which are listed in the back as an appendix. There were in my estimation at least 2500 by the end of 1908 but of course many have closed or almalgamated. There is of course still a lot of work to be done and later editions of the book can carry details of your 1908 group, if you let me have some evidence. The goes into some detail with those 1908 troops that have significant history, both here in the UK and across the world! |
