"All animals are equal"

"All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others".
George Orwell, Animal Farm

Can anyone tell me how we got into the situation where the First XV have a different shirt to the rest of the club? The club colours are part of the club constitution and so should only be changed by a resolution at the AGM.
All players should wear the SAME club shirt, seniors, juniors, minis and ladies. We should not encourage elitism because every player should (and many often do) aspire to play for the First XV and should STILL BE HAPPY to return to the lower sides when someone else is preferred for his position in the First XV.
I am led to believe that last years 1st XV shirts will have to be sold off. Is this true? If so it is expensive madness.
The club shirt is also part of the club's sales stock with profits to be made for the club in selling them. These "special sets" must undermine the appeal to buy a normal club shirt.
We talk glibly about "doing it for the shirt". Well make it the authorised club shirt for every club member.

Re: "All animals are equal"

This is always going to be a sensitive subject. I respect John's opinion but I can also see why the players and those working with the 1st XV want a different kit. It is not about being elitist I'm sure. The new 1st XV shirt looks fantastic The players will be working hard to get into the 1st XV squad to get the chance to wear it.
That said I hope we are not going to get into the position where we change the shirt design every season. However we do have new sponsors on the shirt this season and they have to get something for their money.
The club simply cannot afford to lay out thousands of pounds to allow every squad to wear the same shirt so until that happens we will be in the position of one for them and one for us.
Mind you it is worrying that you say the kit design can only be changed at an AGM and if that is the case we must ensure that the rules of the club are followed.

Players opinion:)

Im sorry but i beleive that it gives us something to work for. i worked my dam hardest to get in that shirt last season because when i wa in it i felt i had worked hard and felt proffesional in it, it also made me feel like i accomplished something.
I beleive its the best idea that the club has EVER had.
:)
I will be working harder than ever to get myself in that shirt :)

Re: "All animals are equal"

The British Army would be in a fine pickle if every elite regiment changed its uniform every year.
Why isn't it the same for a club?

Captain Mainwaring, Folkestone RFC isn't the Army. Jamesy's sentiments are exactly what we want from our players. But then he is quite mad!!!!!!!!!

Re: "All animals are equal"

In my opinion John is right in his first post. It shouldn't be about wearing a different shirt, it is about the honour of playing for the Folkestone 1st XV. Surely a junior or mini is more enthralled playing in the same coloured shirt as the first team, rather than seeing a different colour!!!

With changes to sponsors then the shirts will have to be changed annually, but in past years these have been passed down the senior sides until they have worn out. This keeps costs down unless a sponsor is going to pay for a new strip for another side.

We are one club 1sts, 2nds, 2rds, 4ths, vets, ladies, juniors & minis and one of the strengths over the years has been that the club is not elitist, so lets not start being so now.

As the club president used to say "Look at the badge this is who we are" or words to that effect.

Re: "All animals are equal"

Andy your points are very valid and this is probably something that should be debated at an AGM.
One thing though the different shirt is not intended as an elitist factor. You are right about us being one club.

Re: "All animals are equal"

Phil, although a different shirt is not intended to be elitist it could be perceived as being so, and as I understand it was meant to make the firsts stand out & be something for the other players to look up to. Therefore elitist.

The Saxons wore England shirts when defeating Scotland A. Apart from having England Saxons or Scotland A on there was little different between these shirts & the national sides shirts. Why should we be different?

Re: "All animals are equal"

Crikey first we get compared to the army and now it's England and even the Mighty Jocks.
Anyway there are going to be somepeople who agree with a different shirt and some who don't. All I can say is that some of the players designed a new shirt last season and it was accepted by the Exec. There was talk then of elitism but I assure you that the shirt was not designed to make the 1st XV elite. I can see your point Andy though that some people might perceive that. Honestly it's not. How can anybody call Sparky, Rooty or Ollie elitist!!!!! I was surprised that there is a new shirt again this season but I've seen it and it looks fantastic. Maybe we should be thinking of gradually issuing the same design to all the teams after this season if enough people like it.
But I must admit I do prefer the 1st XV to have a slightly different shirt to the rest of the club. It's a small motivational thing. It would seem a lot of others agree to them having the different shirt. Just as there are a lot of others who dont. Thats why I think it is something that needs to be debated at the next AGM. And probably should have been discussed at this year's AGM!
I understand too that the new design is going to be made available in the club shop when it opens up. It will be interesting to see how many people buy it for themselves. Hopefully they wont all be in the tight-fit style!!!!!!
