Autumn Training

Sitting comfortably, then we will begin…here is the gospel according to Steve…

Periodization – root of all my training plans, begins with setting goals, laying a base of reliable steady training, incorporates fun & easy weeks, builds up to the racing period with a few key milestones along the way then peaks at the right time for that key performance. Put simply its why I ‘hopefully’ set appropriate training sessions for the appropriate of the year.

When I joined the club, the training year had a seasonal ring to it which I see no reason in changing.

September thro to Xmas – Steady Training starting to build endurance, XC for fun & strength (Always with a eye on County XC champs – we have the potential for winning teams/individual in several age groups)

Xmas till March – XC & more XC, I suppose its ok if you wanna run a marathon, but why?

March till June - Transition of all that endurance base into speed for SHORT summer races.

June till August – All about having fun setting new PB’s

August – Have a lay down

Right then boys & girls - To start the ball rolling we need to start taxing our bodies ready for the fun that is Autumn training. This is my favourite time of the year as the weather is brill for early morning, late evening tempo & threshold runs.

OBLA run – here are some links, which should explain last nights objective more eloquently then me…

Put simply we are trying to reduce the tendency to slow down during the last third of a 10K or XC, by raising the threshold at which our bodies can process Lactic acid. As a secondary objective, hopefully last nights fun taught us a bit about pace judgement at the start of a race. Remember we don’t usually have a 3min break during a race.

When I can be bothered (I do have a day job too) I will drop some more notes re – Autumn Training to hopefully explain, motivate & inspire (whoops sorry drooped into management BS there). In the meantime should you have any queries then don’t be shy - post on the forum & drop the large cash laden envelope at No 74.

Gotta run
