The problem with defining distance is it’s a personnel preference issue to some degree. The best thing I can tell you as a rule of thumb to follow is do not engage your suspect in the middle range. This is where you’re going to get hurt as this is the area where the most power can be delivered by a punch or kick. The middle distance is from 28" or so out to about 70" or so.

If you’re trying to get something from your duty belt the time required can be quite long in comparison to the time it takes to engage the suspect. So with that in mind we still prefer to close the distance and get control of our suspect as quickly as possible.
