Re: gelding who will not load

Hi Karen

Firstly, a few questions.... one would assume that you put your chap into the box to get him home when you bought him - or did they deliver? Is yours a box or a trailer? (some horses will travel in one and not another. Another factor to consider is headroom - some of the bigger horses will refuse to load if there is not enough room...... so what you need to do is compare what he was happy to do, and what you are asking of him.

Also, if you have only had him for a couple of weeks, you will need to consider how many changes he has already had to cope with - new owner/carer, new surroundings, new friends, new noises etc etc. He will need to develop his confidence in you and learn to trust you.

What have you already tried to get him in the box?

Re: gelding who will not load

Hi Gabbi, thanks for your help! we did attempt to box him home on purchase but he refused so the seller delivered him in a lorry (so you may be right about him not loading in a horse box) we have the offending horse box parked by our paddock now for him to have a good look at (which he has been doing) we will try to feed him in there but i think the box is too low for him, never mind who said keeping horses was going to be easy!!! do you anyone seeling a horse lorry cheep??? cheers Karen

Re: gelding who will not load

i've had the same problem with my cob, try taking out the centre partion, they feel less confined. also when trying to load make sure you've got plenty of time, when he stops just stand still with tension on the lead rope. even if he goes around the side of your box keep the tension on, try squating down in the box with tension on the lead rope, is curiosity will make him come and have a look. it will take time and practice but in the end you will have a horse that is confient to ride in the box. i know mine used to pull the centre out of his box know he loads himself.

Hi gabbi

If your really having problems I would siggest getting some help. I can recommend Gary Boswell he uses the Monty Roberts approach and is fully trained he has his own web site http://equineempathy.com/ He would be able to sort out the problem

Re: gelding who will not load

Hi gizzypop

Mistaken identity! I don't have any problems loading... and mine is a mare.

She's highly strung, over exciteable, does a good rodeo impression, and generally mad, however loading is not one of my issues.

......but thanks anyway
