yeah, I agree that residuals don't interact. I kinda believe that in these cases, the actual spirit is not even there, only the imprinted memory of the events. For instance, hearing footsteps always at the same time, same place. Or always seeing the same apparition doing the same thing in the same place.
Intellegent hauntings, on the other hand, want to get your attention. I think the spirits in these cases are the ones that touch you, move objects, throw object, or bang on walls. These to me are the most exciting,,,,,
