I can't speak for Ray, but I'd like to share my opinion.
There are many American people who do things that I am ashamed of. There are those that wear white robes and hang people because of the color of their skin. There are those that hurt children, old people, and burn down churches. And of course there are politicians that don't always do the right thing.
I don't think it is possible in a large and mostly free society to avoid such people and actions. If you want to spend your energy finding every flawed person or action in America you can, but that doesn't sound productive to me.
Being a proud American doesn't mean you endorse prejudice, hatred and crime. It doesn't mean you support the cruel and disgusting acts committed by SOME of our soldiers. It means you are proud because you are free to enjoy just about any life style you want.
America is secular and capitalistic - that affords us many opportunities, but there is also much competition. People can succeed as they wish here (it's easy to cite prejudices and hardships in this context, but there are way too many minorities have proved you wrong). As I tell my small daughter every day - "you can be anything you want".
And the one of the best things about being an American – if you don’t like it you are free to change it. You can vote someone in our out, support political causes, and you can always vote with your wallet.
Sure there a lot's of things I'd like to change, but I'm still extremely proud to be an American. |
