Epidural disconection

HI, does anyone have any formalised guidelines or policies within their area? (I'm looking at accidental epidural infusion line disconnection post operativley, whether to reconnect, etc)

Any help gratefully recieved.

Re: Epidural disconection

Hi Diana,

We have written guidelines for witnessed and unwitnessed epidural disconnection. These are based on the limited literature available. I am happy to email you a copy. The literature is referenced in the guidelines.

Re: Epidural disconection

Hi Jane - would you mind sending me a copy too? We say if it's within the last 20 minutes (and we are sure about that) we swab the catheter and reconnect. Unwitnessed, or longer - it comes out. One study I read advocated cutting the line below the fluid level - another suggested up to 8 hours' were okay! So I'd like to see the latest - I don't think I kept the articles since they were so diverse on opinion.

Hi,
I have tried using the above email address but it bounces back. Do you have another one I could try?

Hi Jane,

I'd quite like to see a copy too if that's OK.

Could you send me a copy?

glenn.bruce @ tst.nhs.uk

I have also got Diana's correct email address, and so can send her on a copy if that's OK

Cheers, Glenn.

p.s how's the new pain talk homepage design looking from your end?

Re: Epidural disconection

At the recent pain symposium in Chester one pain team had found a way of preventing epidural disconnection by folding the epidural catheter back towards the filter and wrapping an opsite dressing around the filter and connected catheter. They had zero disconnections following this method. we are going to trial it in our trust
