Critical-Care Pain Observation Tool (CPOT)

Re: Critical-Care Pain Observation Tool (CPOT)

Anyone know any recent research to support (or indeed not-support) the use of this tool?

Re: Critical-Care Pain Observation Tool (CPOT)

No experience of this one myself, but there is a recent article that looked at this:

Pain Assessment in the Critically Ill Ventilated Adult: Validation of the Critical-Care Pain Observation Tool and Physiologic Indicators.

Clinical Journal of Pain. 23(6):497-505, July/August 2007.Gelinas, Celine RN, PhD; Johnston, Celeste RN, DEd

Can't claim to have read this one, but the abstract sounds promising, and ends with the lines:

"Discussion: The CPOT is a reliable and valid tool to assess pain in critically ill adults. Behavioral indicators represent more valid information in pain assessment than physiologic indicators. Further research is needed to explore how specific critically ill populations (eg, head injury) react to a painful procedure."

P.S PLEASE READ

Sorry, should have added, once the link above has loaded you may need to refresh the page to get the full article to load (either hit the refresh icon on your toolbar- the one with the two green arrows, or press your keyboards F5 key)

Their website is designed that way to prevent people directly linking to their articles.

Re: Critical-Care Pain Observation Tool (CPOT)

I've not seen this one used, but looking at it (on the link above) it would look pretty simple to use.

I might try convincing out ITU lot to give it a go.

Re: Critical-Care Pain Observation Tool (CPOT)

Hi
Just wondered if there is any update on the pain assessment tool for critical care. Our critical care unit is also wanting to improve pain assessment particually in the non verbal pt.

Has anybody got any experience of using behavioural scores in practice?

Thanks
