Funding for pain management training

Hi everyone. I am new to this site having found it through Google and was really impressed. I am hoping someone may have some useful information for me.

I am a staff nurse currently working in the A&E area but have a huge interest in pain management. Unfortunately, our Trust has no pain management service whatsoever. I am really interested in trying to change this but obviously need some appropriate qualifications before I can start to badger them. The only experience that I have is through personal experiences and from reading a really extensive bundle of different literature regarding both acute and chronic pain. My interest is in both areas - I don't really have a preference.

I applied for a distance learning degree through Glamorgan University and was accepted but my employer would not help with any funding at all. I even tried my local education authority but because it was distance learning, they also turned me down. I enquired with an educational loan company and they also declined on the basis that they don't fund distance learning courses!! I am at my wits end as I can't afford to fund the training myself and really want to persue this area in my career.

Has anyone got any suggestions that might be able to help or any other courses that may be suitable?

My only problem is that I live in Wales and it is difficult to find anything fairly close to me.

Thanks everyone and thanks for making the site so interesting.

Re: Funding for pain management training

Hi Leheluja
There is loads you can do but keep it simple. Get on some short study sessions first- see RCN bulletin. Seek out other hospitals with pain services and ask to spend time with them. Keep a portfolio of what you attend and how you are developing.
Find an ally (nursing management) and work away at identifying why pain management needs to be on the agenda (how well is pain managed in your current area)? Look for supportive AHP's in the hospital who may be also be interested in pain and spend time in other areas in your hospital to see how they manage pain. Also write a polite letter to your director of education seeking low funding for a study day. I would not attempt a module course until you widen your practical scope.
In South Wales you are in the mecca for pain management! I only wish I had A&E staff who were remotely interested in pain. best of luck....

Re: Funding for pain management training

Hi, firstly - don't give up trying. Many Trusts that now run sucessful 'pain-services' only do so because someone took up the cause!

I agree with Pats comments (above) one of the things that Pat added was

"Find an ally (nursing management)"

I would also suggest that if yours is an acute trust that it would be worth talking to the Anaesthetic Dept. - if you are lucky you may find a Consultant with an interest, and if there are junior anaesthetists I find that they are often looking for something suitable for audit, and the provision of pain managenment for a particular group of patients would fit the bill nicely (e.g # neck of femur)

A nice joint audit will get your interest known, and may help the arguement for a pain service!

Good luck!

Re: Funding for pain management training

Thanks guys for your comments. I am quite isolated from local services, the nearest pain management centre is over 70 miles away so I think visiting a centre is a bit awkward.

I know there is a consultant anaesthetist who has a real interest in pain management who I know fairly well so I think I will go down that road and see where it takes me!!

Thanks again. I really appreciate the suggestions.

Re: Funding for pain management training

Hi,
I only read your plea form this forum. I did my pain management course at Kings college London, through funding from Nightingale funds application for sponsorship. You can try that and go through interview channels.

Re: Funding for pain management training

Hi Leheluja,
Cardiff University has a distance learning pain managment course at MSC level it's worth checking to see if they have it at BSC level if you need that level. It is multi disciplinary so everyone has some input. They ask you to have about 3 weekends in Cardiff per year in a hotel and the rest is distance learning. It's a tough course. Due to personal circumstances I failed to complete it, but my colleague has a post-grad certificate through it. We travelled from Northern Ireland and there were others form Ireland. Not sure about the funding part though, hope this helps.
