urinary catheters and epidurals

Hi
Our current policy is that all patients receiving an epidural for post-operative pain control must have a urinary catheter inserted intra-operatively. Please can you let me know if this is standard practice for other centres? I've tried looking online but although theres plenty of information about urinary retention being a potential side effect of epidural analgesia, I can't find any specific guidelines. Any help / advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: urinary catheters and epidurals

At our trust, patients undergoing general surgical procedures are catheterised in theatre if they are going to recieve an epidural post op. However, orthopaedic patients are not routinely catheterised because of the risk of infection following joint replacement. We therefore use the lower strength Bupivicaine 0.1% with 2mcgs Fentanyl in these patients, instead of Bupivicaine 0.125% with 2mcgs Fentanyl which is used on general surgery
