PCEA in maternity

Dear all
Since the epidural alert 21 in march of this year. I have been asked to work with the maternity unit to improve the use of epidurals. We have purchased McKinley epidural pumps and wish to introduce PCEA. Does any one have or know of any PCEA protocols that may be being used in their mat units that they would be willing to share.

Re: PCEA in maternity

Hi Sharon,
We have recently added four protocols for PCEA to our McKinley pumps and are in the process of alerting ward staff to the additions and what PCEA is all about
One of these is an obstetric protocol and is for bolus only - no continuous infusion:
Bupivacaine 0.125%
Bolus 5ml
Lock out 15 min
1 hour limit 15ml
The obstetric unit hasn't started to use this yet so I'm afraid I can't let you know how well it works.
Best wishes,
Ros
