Preparation of Epidural Solution
Does anyone know of any literature to support the preparation of epidural solution in a centralised area i.e. pharmacy in a sterile condition. Unfortunately, our Director of Nursing seems to think that nursing staff on the ward can prepare the solution. Thanks

Re: Preparation of Epidural Solution
How about the following line: "6.4 Except in special circumstances, the solutions should be prepared aseptically in a special unit." This is from: "Good practice in the management of continuous epidural analgesia in the hospital setting" November 2004 A joint document from: #The Royal College of Anaesthetists. #The Royal College of Nursing #The Association of Anaesthetists ofGreat Britain and Ireland #The British Pain Society #The European Society of Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Therapy You can't get a much better pedigree than that! You can DOWNLOAD THE PDF VERSION BY CLICKING HERE |

Re: Preparation of Epidural Solution
Another... "Maximise the use of ready-to-administer epidural infusions to help reduce the need for complex calculations and preparations." That's from; "Safer practice with epidural injections and infusions" National patient safety Agency: Patient safety alert 21 March 2007 You can download the .pdf version of that HERE |

Re: Preparation of Epidural Solution
I don't have any links to offer, but can I just add that I find the idea frightening. Pharmacy depts. have clean rooms, and buy in pre-prepared items for a very good reason. The error and/or infection risk is just far too great!
