Competencies
Hi, Could anyone tell me how often nursing staff undergo competency training in epidural analgesia (nursing care, removal of catheter, anti-coagulation, anatomy and physiology etc) within your workplace? We are currently asking that it is done yearly. but this is proving difficult to maintain. Any info would be very gratefully received! Many thanks, Jacqui |

Hi Jacqui, We ask staff to come on to study days every three years, and they should complete a competency pack after their first study day. However, the competency packs are rarely completed. We have tried numerous ways in which to get the staff to complete them. Staff would not be released from the wards to attend yearly.

Thanks Charly, You have the same time-frame as we do and it seems that we have the same problem! Ensuring that all staff undergo competencies yearly is proving to be difficult. I have wracked my brains but cannot think of a solution to the problem. Hope you are more successful than I am and thanks once again for your info! Jacqui

We understand that is the responsibility of each individual nurse to maintain their competency and ensure that they have up to date evidence in their portfolios. This is generally monitored by their manager at their yearly appraisal. The pain team's responsibility is to provide baseline training with updates in the event of policy changes. I think there are too many variables to expect the pain team to be responsible for the ongoing monitoring of competence or be prescriptive of a time scale. Exposure and staff turnover being two examples. Dee |

Hi Dee, Thanks for you reply. You are absolutely right; it is the nurses' responsibility to maintain competencies but they have so many to do, and work-load is so heavy that we are finding they are struggling to maintain this yearly. I am keen to support the nursing staff through this, so would welcome any advice on the was forward with this. Thanks once again for your advice. Jacqui |

Hi Jacqui We don't arrange many formal study days any more due to the problem of staff being unable to leave the ward. Instead, we encourage people to contact us direct and will do training on the ward ad hoc. We also have a good link nurse system with lots of two way feedback. Currently trying to ensure bank nurses have PCA and epidural competencies completed. Many of them have joined the bank newly qualified due to lack of jobs. So really, we're just trying to be very flexible and grab opportunities as available.
