IONSYS
Hi, Is anybody using the Fentanyl PCA patches yet? If so what patient group are you using them for and what's your verdict

Re: IONSYS
I gather from talk on here, and from other people I network with that the idea (and indeed the research) is great - but that justifying the cost (which, as I recall is about £100 per 24 hours) is a bit tricky. I reckon it's main use will be in private healthcare, where the total unit cost can be passed on the the patient, or insurance company - thus avoiding the high outlay costs associated with buying PCA pumps. Cheers Glen, Annette - as you work in private healthcare what is your view (or experience) of these? Fi. |

Re: IONSYS
Love the idea, but could not justify the price, as we have PCA pumps available. we would like to see them used for patients that need early mobilisation (without lugging a dripstand and pump) |

Re: IONSYS
I personally am not convinced what benefit it has over a standard morphine PCA because the patient groups it seems to be used for (i.e TAHs) do require iv infusion in the first 24 hours anyway and so the needle free, reduced infection risk etc , which it is marketed with is not an issue. Also I agree the cost of £62 per 24hour patch seems unjustifiable especially if syringe pumps are already available. However most of our anaesthetists seem keen to trial it especially as we have just been offered a huge discount for MAY only. |
