The 4 Motives
4 motives In reviewing the Schiavo case, I see 4 possible motives on why Michael Schiavo put Terri to death. Please keep in mind these points: - These motives existed AT THE TIME THE DECISION WAS (2000 Trial) to end Terri's life. This was point where Terri's fate lay in hands of Michael (His hearsay claims along with Scott and Joan Schiavo's claims put Terri to death). After the 2000 trial, Terri fate had already been decided and it was courts that were commanding that Terri must die (along with Michael Schiavo). - Neither Michael nor the Schindlers ever expected the case to last another 5 years. In fact, Michael wrote in his book that he was annoyed that wasn't able to let Terri die in short order after the 2000 trial (due to the Schindler's appeals). In fact, Michael wrote that he was quite suprised whe he learned that Schindler's could appeal the decision. Keeping these points in mind: 1. Jodi - This I believe was one of his biggest motives. In 1994, Michael proposed to Jodi and started calling her his financee. Michael couldn't marry Jodi until Terri was out of the way. The guardian is supposed to remain as independent as possible and this represented a profound conflict of interest to both Michael and Terri. After Jodi started to have children with Michael, the desire to see Terri dead grew as Michael would have been unable to be a father to the kids while Terri was still alive. Seeing Terri dead allowed Michael to move on with his life and to start a brand new life with Jodi. Cindy Shook testified that Michael had told her he would get angry when Terri was ever mentioned and said that Terri was robbing him of a normal life. So why didn't Michael just divorce Terri. Well there were other reasons but one reason that I have heard was if Michael divorced Terri he would not have been able to marry Jodi in the Catholic church due to the stigma of divorce. 2. The Money - This was another strong motive to see Terri dead. In 1993, Michael refused UTI treatment for Terri pursuant to her death. Michael did this in total secretcy of the Schindlers. Had Terri died in 1993, Michael would have recieved $750,000. Michael knew this. It only took one doctor's recommendation to give him the green light. His new relationship with Jodi also provided him with a motive to see Terri dead in 1993. Michael Schiavo never took steps to donate the money. In 1998, Michael petitioned the court to end Terri's life. Again he stood to inherit $750,000. Michael attempted to create the illusion to court that he wasn't after the money by setting up a charity settlement. However, the offer was bogus do to special stipulations placed in the offer. By around 2002, the money motive drifted away as there was really no money left. Neverthless, for Michael to recieve any money at this time would have placed Michael in a very difficult position. Furthermore, since Terri's financial records are sealed we still do not know if Michael recieved a life insurance payoff or Viatical Settlement at the time of Terri's death. AT THE TIME THE DECISION WAS MADE, Michael was set to inherit Terri's money. In fact, in 2001 Michael would inherited a large sum of money if the Schindlers had been lucky in finding Cindy Shook. 3. Abuse - This has always been possible motive although no tangible proof exists but a lot circumstancial evidence suggests he may have caused her collapse. If this is true, perhaps Michael didn't want Terri to get better because she might reveal what really happened that night. Its interesting that whenever recommendations or therapy were presented to Michael Schiavo that Terri could improve, Michael got real squirrely and angry. The fact that he had her cremated was distrubing too. His reason for the cremation was utterly ridiculous. Later, Felos and Michael got blindsided when found out that an autopsy was going to be performed due to the cremation request. Felos quickly did PR damage control by attempting to convey to the media that Michael had requested the autopsy when in fact he had no control over it. Its also quite suspect that the cremation request was made before the 2002 Doctor trial which investigated that possibility of Terri's improvement. I believe the cremation request was made when is was discovered that Schindler doctors would have full disclosure into Terri's medical file and they were worried would might be found. 4. Punishment to the Schindlers - This motive seems pretty clear. Michael was having Terri killed as payback to the Schindlers. Michael had testified under oath that he refused guardianship to the Schindlers on the grounds that they had caused him hardship over the years. He said there was no other reason. Michael did tell Bob Schindler in 1993 that they would never see their daughter again. Apparently Michael made good on his threat. Judging how he treated the Schindlers toward the end seems to give credibility to this motive. He kicked the Schindlers out of hospice at the time of Terri's death (Michael only writes he kicked Bobby, but Suzanne reported that all three of them were kicked out by orders of Michael Schiavo). He refused to share Terri's ash with them. He even refused to part with a lock of Terri's hair. Michael also threatened to hide Terri's remains (He didn't do this. I guess that would be too cruel). Michael finally provided the Schindlers with a last slap in the face by putting on her grave "I kept my promise." |

James I know only ONE (1) reason Michael Schiave honored Terri's Wish and Contitutional Rights of Self-Determination. Everything else is moot as of March 31, 2007 Get over it, James. |

Walter: I know only ONE (1) reason Michael Schiave honored Terri's Wish and Contitutional Rights of Self-Determination. Everything else is moot as of March 31, 2007 Justice: There's only one problem. Michael Schiavo wasn't Terri. "Self-determination" played no role in the deliberate killing of the brain injured woman. |
