Looking for my people in Northern Liberties. Where do all the gay guys and girls hang out in the hood? You can respond here or email me directly at ben.dover1967@yahoo.com.
Re: Where are all the homos in Northern Liberities?
not funny dude. this neighborhood accepts all kinds here. its not predominantly one or the other. If you are serious, the LGBT peeps have a softball team sponsored by the Druids Keep so you might want to try there.
Re: Where are all the homos in Northern Liberities?
First, "Ben Dover" is a classic play on words and hysterical. So lighten up and get a sense of humor. Second, I know that NorLib is very accepting and quite gay. I am being serious when I ask where do "we" hang-out.
Re: Where are all the homos in Northern Liberities?
Well "Ben", Kevbo sounded entirely appropriate being wary. As you are likely well aware, the net's a great place to bait GLBTs for bashing, and someone posting with a notsomuch classic as tired cliche name like "ben.dover1967" -- which is probably used nowadays by more spambots and phobes than actual gay men -- is more provocative of suspicion than helpful pointers.
I don't know if there are any real strictly gay hangouts in NL. There's a generally tolerant vibe throughout the neighborhood and I've seen same sexed couples all over, I can't say I've ever been anywhere with a great number in NL. Maybe that's because NL's really not that far from "Washington Square West" / The Gaybourhood. If a more knowledgeable gay person thinks you're legit, maybe he or she'll give you a better clue to the immediate area.
Re: Where are all the homos in Northern Liberities?
As long as this is not a gay bashing thread...
This neighborhood doesn't have a gay bar. However, the closest our neighborhood has to a "gay bar" is Druid's Keep. All of the bars in Northern Liberties tend to be very diverse. You see many African-Americans, yuppies, and hipsters hanging out. It's very cool. However, I understand why a single gay person would want to go to a gay bar, because if I were a single guy I'd want to go to a bar with as many single women as possible.
Washington Square (affectionately known as "The Gayborhood") has a very large LGBT community. Woody's, at 202 S 13th St, is a very popular nightspot for the LGBT community and isn't too far from us. Bob and Barbara's at 15th and South also does LGBT community nights.
Re: Where are all the homos in Northern Liberities?
Not just bars, and there's at least a half dozen others as well known and popular as Jordan's pointed out (Uncle's is a quieter place with a slightly older crowd, 12th Air Command is dance club, Camac streets's got a couple of quiet spots), but the Gayborhood (which has so stuck as a nickname, I think one of the community newspapers is published under that title) has loads of coffee shops, one of the nation's best LGBT bookstores, etc.
I don't know the particulars, but I remember also hearing that the neighborhood has quite a history, actually having Stonewall type moments well before Stonewall.
This is of course all assuming, Benny D., that you're new to Philly, and not just NL.
Re: Where are all the homos in Northern Liberities?
Oh thanks so much for the lesson, I had NO IDEA that it was a play on words. I'm just a caveman lawyer. We have a lot of BS going on in NL between the skinheads and holdups, I was just being a little suspicious for "your people's" sake.
FYI- Ask anyone who knows me and they will tell you I'm one of the funniest mofo's around yo.
Re: Where are all the homos in Northern Liberities?
Ben Dover,
If you find the amount of LGBT activities lacking but feel that there is an interest, you should contact some of the local bars and try to setup an LGBT night.
Azure, Abbaye, 700 Club, Ministry of Information, or Druid's Keep would probably love to do an LGBT night if there's an interest. I'm willing to be there are quite a few gays in the hood that would love to meet each other for drinks.
I have to warn you, though, some of us 'breeders' might show up to enjoy a little fabulousness.
Re: Where are all the homos in Northern Liberities?
Thanks for all the input. Maybe we just plan on having an impromptu happy hour somewhere, esp. now that the weather is nice. Any suggestions?
And "breeders" (not my word but from another post) are always welcome. I love straight people. In fact, both of my parents are straight and I completely support and accept them.

Ben,
"And "breeders" (not my word but from another post) are always welcome. I love straight people. In fact, both of my parents are straight and I completely support and accept them."
LOL, I laughed at that one. I was joking about the "breeders." I've always found gays to be very tolerant, and of course, super fabulous. ;)
Re: Where are all the homos in Northern Liberities?
I went to Druid's Keep last night for the first time. Cool space. I love the hole in the wall atmosphere and the Husky walking around. Very sweet dog. I particularly liked the bartender who remembered our drink order every time we went to the bar.
I definitely didn't get a gay vibe there but there is potential. I think we should declare Thursdays as the unofficial gay night at Druid's Keep and let the word get around to all the q-u-e-e-r-s in the hood. Who will join me next Thursday?
Re: Where are all the homos in Northern Liberities?
I'm new to the 'hood and also looking to meet other gays up here. I haven't been out to most of the places mentioned so far, but will be visiting them in short order. I think especially Abbaye tomorrow night. Druids Keep too.
