Any one know the story with the Spring Garden Market on Spring Garden and Fourth St., and when its supposed to open? Noticed a new sign up on its roof.
It has stuff on the shelves and in some of what look like refrigeration or freezer units. I am wondering how long this stuff will be on the shelves before it actually opens.
IT'S OPEN...IT'S FABULOUS!! Thank the good God-of-your-choice. Finally a nearby market! And, for you vehicle-people there's a huge parking lot behind it with access from the 4th Street side.
While you're out, check-out the "alive" poultry place on Spring Garden between 11th and 12th. Take a poncho. Also, fabulous!
What kind of variety does the market have? Is it a cross between Super Fresh and an Asian market? Avoiding the traffic on Columbus-Ave would be amazing.
Dude. Relax. You're still coming home with something dead. The beauty/novelty is you get to choose it, decide how it's slaughtered, how it's butchered. And, it's as fresh as it gets. Some of us like fresh.
It has everthing. Check it out. You'll be pleased. Forget about Superfresh, once I-95 is under construction for the next decade and the casinos move in you wont be able to get to South Philadelphia anyway.
Seriously, check it out. Of course, it's pro-Asian but it has what we need: food/provisions.
Awesome, thanks. I love going to the Asian markets as well, so one stop shopping works for me, especially with free parking. Oh' and you are so correct on trips to South Philly and Ikea. It will be for special occassions only. Thanks for the info.
I checked it out this afternoon, and I was the only shopper in there. There were still a lot of empty shelves and people unloading produce, etc. Two out of the 3 people I asked regarding whether or not they are open did not know - and they work there. Almost all of the dry goods are Asian + a large produce/meat/seafood section.
It'll be great to have a market in the neighborhood, but definitely give them a few days to get everything straightened out!
I was driving down 4th around 6PM (Tues the 11th) and noticed the lights on and the cardboard off the doors and windows. So I went in.
They told me the official opening is Wednesday the 12th, but I was welcome to shop. The store is totally done, and when I was there about 80% of the shelves were stocked, and they were in the process of stocking the remaining 20%.
It's a great market, sort of like the giant Asian supermarkets in South Philly, but with a few extras. Really great. I'm looking forward to shopping there regularly.
I was there this afternoon, and what a welcome sight! The fresh food selection is amazing--big tanks of live lobster, carp, eel, more fish than I could identify. Butcher area was excellent, HUGE selection of fruits and vegetables. There's also a delightul array of frozen and microwavable Asian foods, incredible candies, cookies and crackers, serious teas and a solid two aisles of cookware. And the prices are extremely reasonable.
Plus they play actual Asian music and the LCD panels on the cash register show serene landscapes along with your prices!
Just got back. It's a wonderland.
They're open til 9:00, and until Saturday, they're offering a 10% discount.
It's fascinating, we just wandered the aisles marveling at the unusual things. Thousands of different styles of noodles and dumplings; strange looking fish and vegetables; juices from fruits I didn't know existed.
asian market... awesome.
i've been wanting to try out some of the recipes from this site for a while now and just haven't managed to get the supplies. now i hardly have an excuse. next chance i get, i'm going to make an attempt at drunken noodles with tofu.
They have a full-page ad in the CityPaper that says the official grand opening will be Saturday/15, with free food and all sorts of other goodies.
This place is ridiculously well-stocked, spotlessly clean and very reasonably priced. The corner (where the restaurant used to be) is still a mystery space. Dare we hope that an eatery of some sort will arise there?
