New drive suddenly unformatted

I got a new 200gb maxtor ATA133 hard drive. I connected it to an empty IDE channel on the motherboard of a newer P4 pc. The HD controller on this machine has 48-bit lba support. I then used the windows xp disk manangement console to create one huge partition and format the disk NTFS.

I then moved the disk to my other computer, an older P3. I connected the drive to an add-in pci hard drive controller, a promise ultra66. This controller does NOT have 48-bit lba support, and does not show the full capacity of the drive during boot up. However, windows xp (sp1) recognized the drive and showed the correct formatted capacity of 189 GB.

I proceeded to copy mp3s, etc, to the drive (I did not load an OS or make the drive bootable). The drive seemed to operate normally for about one week. One evening I copied about 4gb of data from a dvd-r to the drive, but did not attempt to read or verify the data. I then shut down the computer and went to sleep. The next morning I booted into windows xp, and the 200gig drive is no longer readable. When I attempt to look at the drive in windows explorer it says the drive is not formatted. The windows disk management console now shows a healthy, *unformatted* partition.

I ran HD workbench with the drive still in the P3 machine, and it showed the drive's capacity as 128GB. I did no further testing, but noted all smart values were normal.

I become worried the old controller card was causing problems, so I moved the drive back to the P4 system to run tests. I did a full read-only test with HD workbench and no errors were found, and all smart values were normal (253 or 252). I-recover demo let me copy all files from the drive. There are no
signs of corruption in the recovered files, however I only tested a representitive sample. I don't think there is anything pysically wrong with the drive.

The drive had about 107GB on it at the time of failure, and was minimally fragmented. So what do you think happened? I suspect that the ultra66 pci controller card not recognizing the full capacity of the drive had something to do with it. Perhaps data was eventually written beyond the 128GB mark that the controller can see, causing some type of corruption? I thought windows xp could support a drive this large even with an older controller card, but now I am not so sure.

Can disk patch repair the damage? Was it a bad idea to format my new drive on one computer, and then move it to another? I intend to use the 200GB drive exclusively in the P3 system; the only reason I initially formatted it with the P4 is I was concerned about the older ultra66 controller not seeing the full capacity. Do I simply need to get an ata 133 controller card with 48-bit lba support for the P3 to prevent this problem from recuring?

I greatly appreciate any assistance you can offer, and I can provide further information if needed. A disk patch log file created with the drive connected to the P4 system follows:

Re: New drive suddenly unformatted

Your description of the problem (128 gb barrier problem) is spot on. You should not have moved this disk to the older system. The fact that it reported the correct partition size says nothing about potential 128Gb problems (check www.48bitlba.com). So:

Can disk patch repair the damage? - No
Was it a bad idea to format my new drive on one computer, and then move it to another? - Yes, horribly
...Do I simply need to get an ata 133 controller card with 48-bit lba support for the P3 to prevent this problem from recuring? - Yes

About getting your data back: you had already figured out that iRecover is the way to go in this scenario. Your tests were okay, so i'd say you pretty much know where to go from here. Good luck!

Regards,
Tom

Re: New drive suddenly unformatted

I have new information about the hard drive issue I reported.

I have installed a new hard drive controller card with 48-bit LBA support in the P3, and the drive is back up and running after getting a new partition and ntfs format.

IRecover was indeed able to salvage many of my mp3 files from the drive, but not ALL of them. What happened was when I copied the DVD video files to the drive as described above, they were written on top of files already on the drive. So, as I went through the recovered files, opening them with the windows media player, some of the mp3s contained short sections of video!

I was able to easily discover which of the thousands of mp3s were corrupt by going through the IRecover log files. All of the corrupted files were grouped together in the log. It was a simple matter to locate the beginning and end of the block of bad files. This narrowed my search considerably and saved me a lot of time. I was able to restore the lost files from DVD-R backups, so in the end the damage was minimal.

Hopefully some others can learn from this and not repeat my mistake. Also remember to make backups!

Thanks for your assistance and a great product.
-David
