Almost there, but must be missing something

okay.. I think I've almost got it, but something still isn't right. Here's the scenario..
I did a dumb thing and tried to merge 2 partitions (C drive containing my OS files, and D - extended partition I think- containing my program files) together with Partition Magic 8.0. During the merge, the app threw an error and I lost my partition D. I've been able to play with a few other tools and I can see the data is still on the hard drive, so I though diskpatch might be a good option. The demo found the extended partition (drive D). So I bought the software and ran the repair. So, I now have a drive D, but now windows can't read anything from it. I get a message that "the file or directory is corrupted or unreadable". I know the data is there though. I'll attach the log file on another post because it is too long and my email client obviously not longer works. Any suggestions? What did I miss?

Thanks for any help..

Lance Manesse

Re: Almost there, but must be missing something

Hello,

Yes, dumb indeed ;-) Now that's something you won't be trying again any time soon...
At this point the logfile shows nothing much out of the ordinary. That could mean that PM either didn't get far (good), or didn't get far enough to update partition structures such as the MBR and the bootsectors (bad). What layout did you select for the resulting PM merge? What size? And how long was PM busy?

Regards,
Tom

Re: Re: Almost there, but must be missing something

Yeah.. I won't be trying it anytime soon. And their support was awful. I waited on the phone for 2 hours before I got someone on the phone, and then he said he'd have to transfer me to a specialized team. I waited for another 1/2 hour before hanging up. Okay.. here is everything I did with PM. First, I readjusted drives E (websites) and F (storage), by reducing their size. That worked no problem. I'm not sure what you mean by what layout I selected. I just told PM to merge the C & D partitions. D was an extended partition I believe. The resulting size would've been somewhere around 20 GB I think. PM was busy for about 5 minutes. I think it said is was about 67% done (not sure how many steps) and then threw that error saying the headers didn't match. It asked me to select continue and then rebooted. So, I thought it must have aborted the attempt. I see it did create a "programs" folder on the C drive, which is where the files were supposed to go. Hope that helps.

Re: Re: Almost there, but must be missing something

one more thing that might be of interest...

Windows recognizes the new partition in computer management, but says the format is now RAW, instead of NTFS. Still, I can't run a dskchck on it or anything.

Re: Re: Almost there, but must be missing something

okay.. I'm looking through your website and see some other references to the RAW data type. From what I read, it seems that I need to do a boot repair on that partition so that windows will read it as NTFS instead of RAW. Is that correct?

If so, I think I'm going to need to next version up as the standard version doesn't do fix boot on partitions.

What do you recommend?

Re: Almost there, but must be missing something

Hello,

"First, I readjusted drives E (websites) and F (storage"

- But they can be accessed, right?

"I just told PM to merge the C & D partitions. D was an extended partition I believe. The resulting size would've been somewhere around 20 GB I think."

- We see no traces for this merged partition.

"PM was busy for about 5 minutes."

- In my experience merging is a process that takes quite some time. 5 mins would mean it has hardly started. Taking the 5 minutes into account I think the 2 involved seperate partitions as we see them right now are the ones we'd have to deal initially.

"okay.. I'm looking through your website and see some other references to the RAW data type. From what I read, it seems that I need to do a boot repair on that partition so that windows will read it as NTFS instead of RAW. Is that correct?"

- The boot sectors look valid as they are right now. DiskPatch will not fix an intact boot sector.

- The chances this can be fixed are poor. For fixing a file system, everything has to be right after the repair, and there's simply too much to take into account. Your problem is beyond a simple partition table or boot sector issue. We do not even know what PM already did to the file system structures.

IMO trying to copy data from the partitions is the better approach in this case. I'd start trying with Linux (Knoppix CD, see DiskPatch 2 user guide for URL). Sometimes an NTFS partition can be accessed using Linux even when Windows can't. If that doesn't do the trick, try a data recovery file copy tool like iRecover. If you decide on iRecover, first use the demo and actually try to copy the files from a folder to check if they're intact.

If you use iRecover, initially accept the partitions as they are defined right now. If that doesn't do the trick we can give iRecover values manually to treat the 2 partitions as one.

"Still, I can't run a dskchck on it or anything."

- Chkdsk *may* sometimes do the trick, however if it doesn't it often makes the recovery even more complex than it already was. It's probably a good idea to prevent chkdsk from running if data can not be accessed.

Joep
