HD and/or photo recovery

Okay, here goes. I was tuning a friend's computer and overclocked it, booted into XP Pro just fine, ran some benchmark programs, rebooted, ran an antivirus scan which I left running, came back and saw a Disk Read Error, press Ctl-Alt-Del to reboot on the POST screen. I did that twice, no luck. Booted with XP Pro CD into recovery console and tried fixboot, XP Pro said it had fixed the bootsector. Rebooted, same Disk Read Error. Back into XP Pro recovery console and tried fixmbr. Nothing happened, no message.

I wasn't too worried about the HD until my friend said he had several thousand pictures on the HD that he had no backups of. Oops.

So I found this forum, downloaded DP, purchased a PRO licence, and cloned the original 10GB drive to a 20GB drive. It took 1.5 days. Not sure if that is normal or not.

Here is the logfile taken from the cloned drive.

Also, I moved the cloned drive to another working system and used FileScavenger which found all the files but when i recovered them the pictures were reduced in quality somehow. Unfortunately the ones I had test-viewed were fine. Most of them were not and this I discovered after I reformatted the original drive.

If I can use DP to restore the cloned drive that would be great. If you think iRecover will work for me then I'll use that. I would prefer to restore the cloned drive to a working state, however so that it boots into XP.

Some guidance would be appreciated. If you require any more info I'll be happy to provide it. Thanks!

Re: HD and/or photo recovery

Hello,

"So I found this forum, downloaded DP, purchased a PRO licence, and cloned the original 10GB drive to a 20GB drive. It took 1.5 days. Not sure if that is normal or not.
"

Depends on the disk size and state of the disk. 1.5 days for a 10 Gb disk is extrmely long. This may indeed suggest physical disk problems. The logfile created during the clone operation could tell us more. Maybe you can sent us all files from the DP_FILES folder on the DiskPatch diskette.

"If I can use DP to restore the cloned drive that would be great. If you think iRecover will work for me then I'll use that. I would prefer to restore the cloned drive to a working state, however so that it boots into XP."

How was the disk partitioned? Currently one partition of about 10 Gb is defined. I assume you ran DiskPatch on the clone.

More partitions are found, but I assume they are remains of the original partitioning of the disk you clones to (you didn;t wipe this disk first I assume).

The 10 Gb partition is intact boot sector and partition table wise, so there is nothing DiskPatch can fix there.

You mention you can not boot from this disk, but I do not understand if you have tried to access the disk using a second XP install, Linux or a DOS NTFS driver.

A good ntfs driver is NTFS4DOS from www.datapol.de. try it (it's free) and see if you can copy the files to another disk.

Re: HD and/or photo recovery

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately this is my first crack at data recovery and I've made a few mistakes.

Both the original disk and the clone disk were on the same IDE channel so I don't know if maybe that's why it took so long to clone. The system is an older P3 450 with 256MB of ram.

I thought I had copied and pasted the original logs from the floppy onto another computer for quicker viewing and emailing but can't seem to find them. I must have deleted them. And when I determined (thought) all was well I deleted the logs from the floppy - I won't make that mistake again.

The original disk was indeed one partition of 10GB. I did run DiskPatch on the clone.

You are correct in that I did not wipe the clone drive of partitions. Something else I should have done.

I have tried to access the disk from another XP install and it shows up as being RAW with 0 bytes of data present.

I'm going to to try the NTFS4DOS driver and see how that works.

I noticed in the clone drive log that it says invalid partition table - error loading operating system - missing operating system. Does that have any relevancy here?

Thanks again!

Todd

Re: HD and/or photo recovery

more reflections:
The fact that the clone took a long time may suggest that the original disk was bad. In that case the clone could be missing sectors in other parts than the ones we can fix using DiskPatch, which means that iRecover is a better way to go from here if you can access the drive using XP or NTFS4DOS. Whatever happens, don't let checkdisk run.
You say you formatted the original disk. How? If you performed a standard format iRecover should still be able to find stuff there. Also, during the format, did you run into read/write errors? Might be an idea, run a surface scan on the original disk to determine if the disk is bad.
For now we'll wait for your test results with NTFS4DOS.
The error notifications in the logfile are not something to worry about, they're always there and should be there.

Regards,
Tom

Re: HD and/or photo recovery

Hello,

XP is able to see the clone disk but I can't access it while in XP, it just says the disk is RAW.

I ran NTFS4DOS and it can also see the clone disk but won't initialize it. The disk is on a system as a secondary master. When I have it on as a primary master with no other disks present NTFS4DOS gives me some sort of exception error and does not run.

I have not let checkdisk run.

I low-level formatted the original disk and then formatted it after that into NTFS and then reinstalled XP for the owner so I expect there is no hope of getting anything off of it now. All I have is the clone disk.

During the format I did not run into any read or write errors but I will run a surface scan on the original disk and report the results.

Re: HD and/or photo recovery

Hello,

If you have ran a low level format on the source disk and no errors were reported then you can skip the surface scan on that disk.

If NTFS4DOS doesn't do the trick, try something like iRecover. As I did mention before, the partition table and boot sector lool intact so the damage must be somewhere else (for example, a corrupt MFT), and that type of damage DiskPatch can not fix.
