I have a situation in which I tried to change some partition info on a usb hard drive I had attached to my computer using Partition Magic 8.0. The program changed the boot sector and fat on my main drive. I used several utilities to try to get the boot sectore to work correctly. However, things got worse. I turned to iRecover. It appears that it can see the data and I can Recover most of it but I don't have another drive large enough to put that data on. Is there any way iRecover can change the BootSector and Fat so I can access the drive? Your story is confusing, as they almost always are ;-) This is from a 160gb hard drive that I partitioned with a 40gb primary drive and the rest was for data (music and downloads). Both are Fat32. When using other tools (Hard Drive Mechanic), it created the boot sector, mbr, and fat but they are not correct and now the drive reports with the wrong sizes and still won't boot. Please help me get this drive in working order. I'd hate to start from scratch. Attached is a log for today and one that I made (didn't even know I had it) from before using HDM. I am going to change the geometry and send the results when I get home tonight. I just have one question. Doesn't the geometry get determined by the physical drive itself? I know most programs I ran had the 240/63 setup. If it should have been 255/63, that may be the problem. I'm just asking questions to get a better understanding. I've been flooded with info about boot sectors, mbrs, partition tables this weekend (without much sleep). Maybe you can make a sticky post with information about how each are relevant. May keep down on some of the questions from people like me. LOL Product you are using: iRecover Operating system / Service Pack: XP SP2 Size of subject harddisk: 160GB Mar 3rd, 2005 - 3:04 AM
Here's the log from Defining the drive as 255/63 Product you are using: iRecover/DiskPatch Operating system / Service Pack: xppro sp2 Size of subject harddisk: 160gb Mar 3rd, 2005 - 8:29 AM
No proof is found for the partition setup that you originally described. The first FAT32 (40-50Gb) only has a partition table entry and nothing else, that's not enough for recovery. The backup boot sectors contain the wrong info so they can't be used either. It's quite likely that harddisk mechanic has something to do with this; our experiences with that tool were not good (to put it politely). I agree that the boot sector and it's backup are bad. Is there any way I can make one up that will point to the correct info if I get the parameters correct? I notice that iRecover can see the two partitions almost the way they should be. That might be possible but you'd need to know what the size of each FAT is, and no FAT sectors were found, so this is not an option. iRecover is your best bet. I am still working on this problem. I am trying to find out about the number of heads on the drive. Some say 255 and some say 240. Is there a way to find out for sure? Also, what determines the number of FATs? I'm going to do another scan tonight after working on some things and post again. Mar 7th, 2005 - 6:13 AM

LOL. I was about to give up anyway. I had already purchased iRecover to get the files if my antics didn't work. I don't think the drive is so corrupt that it won't work. However, I have learned a very valuable lesson about hard drives. When I finish doing everything, I'm going to run diskpatch just so I can get a log of everything about my hard drive, print it up and put it away for safe keeping. I'll post and let you know how the file recovery goes. Product you are using: iRecover Operating system / Service Pack: XP SP2 Size of subject harddisk: 160GB Mar 7th, 2005 - 11:47 PM

I was able to get some of my files. All of my mp3 files are corrupt though. Did I do anything wrong or should I try it again? Also, is there any way to filter all of the files shown on the tree so I can recover certain files without looking through each directory? I think I know what happened. All of my music files were on the 2nd partition. When IRecover ran, it ran with consecutive data from the 1st partition. It never did skip the necessary sectors to start the 2nd partition. Please let me know if there is a way to have it search for the 2nd drive so I can try to recover those files correctly. There is an undo but it took 27 floppies to write out. At around floppy 15, I got an error and decided to trash the backup. Anyway, I got the most important files from the original partition thanks to iRecover. As I sit here and type, I'm writing zeroes to the 160GB hard drive so I can start from scratch. I think once I'm done, I'll run diskpatch to get an accurate report of the had drive, print it up and store it someplace safe. I don't want to go through this again. BTW, I plan to use the exact same parameters to re-establish the drive. Just for grins, after I run diskpatch tomorrow, I'll post the results to see how bad I was off from the correct sectors.
