yet another flavour of the 137GB-issue

I've been using two Western Digital WD2500JB HDDs for about a year now without any problems, after resolving some inital issues regarding the 137GB-limit in Windows.
I am running the two drives, together with two smaller ones, using the WD-supplied controller card that came with the retail version of one of the drives.
Both of the 232GB HDDs are partitioned to 3 * ~80B.

This morning, I put a new graphics card into my computer and moved the WD IDE controller card down one PCI slot to give the new card more space.
Restarting my computer, I find that on both of the large disks the last partition has disappeared and data on the second partition shows up but is only partly accessible - which looks very much like everything above 137GB is affected.

Windows Computer Management -> Disk Management tool still lists the disks as 232GB, with two 80GB partitions and 80GB "free space" at the end.
Partition Magic, however, claims the disks are 137GB, however they do contain the two partitions and 80GB of free space at the end, so this is self-contradictory.

No data has been moved to or from the affected disks whatsoever, so I'm hopeful that you might be able to help me sort this out.

Relevant PQ PartitionInfo and DiskPatch reports follow.

Weird ...

How many disks are attached? Can you run the DOS version of partinfo, this way the disk numbering of Partinfo and DiskPatch will correspond.

Anyway, the 232 Gb disk you have scanned with DiskPatch is indeed seen as 232 Gb. 3 Logical partitions are present and properly defined in the partition table. The boot sectors look fine (verify the label names we found, RAMBONAL, SPIELBERG and TRAMPQUA. If those are correct, the volumes are probably okay.

Hooking up this disk to a fully patched Windows XP (like yours) should normally allow access to all 3 partitions. I can not explain why you can not, or why PartitionTragic, which uses Windows API to access the disks, tells you the disks are 137 Gb. This suggests Windows somehow lost it's ability to work with disks > 137 Gb.

It appears to be a Windows problem, not a partition table problem.

Answers:

How many disks - 6 disks in total. 2*120GB on the MB IDE channels. 2*230 and 2*120 on the WD controller.

PartInfo DOS version - see below. I'm only posting the relevant parts, let me know if you want the full output. I notice that no error messages show up...

Label names - should be "RAMBO", "SPIELBERG" and "TRAMP", I guess the appended letters may be leftovers from previous (longer) names?

Windows problem vs. partition problem - so this means that there is nothing wrong with the disks, all I need to do is get windows to look at them properly?

Okay, I think I'm fully remembering now what happened when I first installed the controller card a year ago.
The card is a "Promise Ultra100 TX2 IDE Controller" that comes with the retail version of the WD2500JB drive. When I first put in the controller, Windows didn't accept the drivespace above 137GB. I then tried replacing the Windows default driver for the controller with the one that WD recommended for this card, see

I followed to the instructions on that page, but it only worked partially - it acknowledged the disks' full size and let me create partitions beyond 137GB, but data on these partitions would be lost after a reboot. What a finally ended up doing was reinstall windows, putting the controller driver first thing in the installation process when it says "press F6 if you need to install 3rd-party SCSI drivers", which made everything work fine, until I removed the controller card yesterday. I just checked the controller driver in Device Manager and it's back to Windows default, which I guess makes
sense - moving the PCI card was like unplugging one and installing a different device as far as Windows was concerned, so he had no reason to keep the proper driver. As I said, simply installing the WD driver on top of the windows one didn't help last time, I had to reinstall windows and put the WD driver before windows could install his own.

IS THERE ANY POSSIBILITY OF DATA LOSS IF I JUST MESS AROUND WITH THE CONTROLLER DRIVERS, AS LONG AS I DON'T WRITE TO THE HDDs IN QUESTION???

I know this is now not really within your scope any more, but if you have any suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate them!

Hello,

Whatever you do, make sure you do not accidentally write to the disks in question! Reinstalling drivers shouldn't alter the disk's contents theoretically.

Partinfo indeed confirms that all's well as far as it concerns partition tables and boot sectors and this is purely a Windows 'thing'.

Any advice I would give, I'd pull off http://www.48bitlba.com/ anyway ... So I suggest you have a look there yourself. They pretty much cover the whole subject.

WHEW! Everything back to normal.

Thanks for the link, 48bitlba.com provided me with the hints I needed.

The problem before was, as I know now, that there was a conflict between the Promise driver and Window's generic atapi.sys, which resulted in the weird behaviour I described - I could install the driver, which would then give me access to the whole HDD space, but upon restart windows would notice this conflict and roll back to its own controller driver to save me from possible data loss - the problem being that this reinstated the 137GB barrier.
Somehow, installing the Promise driver first thing during Windows install had prevented this conflict from occuring (or, at least, from getting noticed).

The latest SP2 upgrades I installed today finally eliminate this problem as they include a new atapi.sys which does not create a conflict any more, hence I could now simply reinstall the Promise driver and everything's fine - no data was compromised.
