Re: New Indian Restaurant/Delivery on Girard called "Tiffin"
I ordered delivery tonight - Chicken Tikka Masala, Vegetable Korma, and Samosas. It was very tasty and cheap. They gave us free dahl too. I usually order take out from Lovash on South Street and I would say this place is about as good tastwise and less expensive.

Haven't tried it yet myself, but I did a little Web searching and found this:
http://www.tiffin.com
Looks very interesting.

Re: New Indian Restaurant/Delivery on Girard called "Tiffin"
The web site looks interesting, but was definitely not what I expected.
I'll give it a shot.
What other Indian places deliver to NL, anyway? I've mostly stuck to pizza/wings delivery since those are about the only menus I get.
A couple of things I didn't see on the site that someone might know:
Where is the actual storefront if I want to pick it up on my way home?
How late do they deliver?

Re: New Indian Restaurant/Delivery on Girard called "Tiffin"
First post said it's somewhere on Girard, but I don't think it's a sit down and eat restaurant. Might be just a kitchen.
Here's an interesting NYT article I got when I was googling around "Tiffin" "Philadelphia" and "delivery"
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/03/15/dining/15deli.html?ei=5088&en=eac4d528b069018a&ex=1300078800&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss&pagewanted=all
"Tiffin" looks like it can be roughly translated from Hindi as "take out / delivery food container", and speaks to an Indian city practice of having a good homecooked lunch delivered. So, given that and the website's lack of a physical address, I'm guessing this place may do strictly delivery, and take out if you insist.
If this Tiffin is on the same lines as the Tiffin businesses profiled in the Times, cool.

Re: New Indian Restaurant/Delivery on Girard called "Tiffin"
Its on 7th and Girard. No take-out or dinning there for me...Just deliveries!
Looks like a great menu and its about time we had some more options in our hood.
Best of luck to TIFS(Tiffin for short)

Tried it on Thurs night. Fabulous. Good food and cheap.

Re: New Indian Restaurant/Delivery on Girard called "Tiffin"
tried the food last night, everything was super awesome!! the food came with lot of accompliments such as daal, raita and pickles (yummy!). Prices are very low compared to other indian joints in the city. spoke to the tiffin folks last night, apparently there has been a delay in getting the new signs, that is why they have not openend the storefront for dining-in. they say it should be open early next week.

Re: New Indian Restaurant/Delivery on Girard called "Tiffin"
Tiffin is located at 710 W. Girard. The sign over the restaurant still reads "CHICK-N-FISH" from the previous tenant, so it's easy to miss on the street. The owner used to own Karma in Old City, but he sold it recently. He intended to have tiffin.com just be an internet site and use the Girard location as a kitchen only. However, since he's opened, there's been enough interest in the local community to develop the location as a sit-in restaurant, so he's currently working to upgrade the decor. Another welcome addition to the neighborhood...

Re: New Indian Restaurant/Delivery on Girard called "Tiffin"
Chik'N'Fish closed? I liked place. (Although it was empty both times I went there, so I guess I shouldn't be shocked.)
I'm glad to know it's going to have a sit down place, though. I was reading the web site and it said you had to place dinner orders by 2PM..... Is that the case? That's a lot of forethought for delivery!
|
|
|
Re: New Indian Restaurant/Delivery on Girard called "Tiffin"
You don't need to preorder by 2pm, that's only if you want the dinner special. They have a regular take out menu that you can order from anytime.

Re: New Indian Restaurant/Delivery on Girard called "Tiffin"
Ordered lunch a while ago, after getting to know about it from a flyer struck on my door,Well the food is delcious and prices are really low as we got food in 20 bucks for three people,I checked their website it says that they have lunch and dinner tiffins which are different on everyday and week so they can deliver fresh food with different taste fow everbody.
But they have a regular store menu and the driver when asked was telling me that they will be having a small dine in also in few days.isn't that amazing that finally indian food had arrived at this area.
Good luck to them.

Re: New Indian Restaurant/Delivery on Girard called "Tiffin"
Tiffin is an excellent addition to the neighborhood (even though it's just outside NL between 7th and Franklin on Girard). I called in an order today and walked over to pick it up. The people that work there are very nice and excited about the warm reception they have received so far. The storefront restaurant should be open in several days for dining in. I will be making this 10 minute walk as often as I can.

|
Re: New Indian Restaurant/Delivery on Girard called "Tiffin"
Is there regular menu tucked away on the web site?
I drove by the storefront (old Chik'N'Fish, it sounds like) last night and it didn't look like they were ready for walk-ins yet.

Re: New Indian Restaurant/Delivery on Girard called "Tiffin"
My first online order experience @ www.tiffin.com was great. I couldn't believe the delicious Indian food deliverd to my door steps so cheap....
I received a paper menu with delivery that mentioned that they also have a website www.tiffinstore.com for their regular menu. I checked out the website but it seems that none of the links are working. It has the address/phone number of the restaurant.
I think it is a great addition to the neighborhood and I can't wait to go there and eat

Re: New Indian Restaurant/Delivery on Girard called "Tiffin"
Click on "Order Now" at the bottom of the screen and you get their menu!

Re: New Indian Restaurant/Delivery on Girard called "Tiffin"
Don't be frightened by the metal grate over the storefront. The actual entrance is the door to the left of the storefront (also with a metal grate over it). Despite their appearance, they are definitely open for walk-in business, as I have been there several times already to place an order at the counter for take-out.

Re: New Indian Restaurant/Delivery on Girard called "Tiffin"
Anyone order the Tifflinwalla style meals (the two choices for lunch or dinner) and stuff off what I guess you might call the "regular" menu? Is there a difference? From the link I included, it sounded like there was more care put into the Tifflinwalla style meals than traditional take out. It sounds like they wanted to do a "traditional" (see article as to why that's in quotes) Tifflin service, but are adapting to neighborhood demand for take out, broader delivery menu, and apparently sit down service. All interesting, but I'm wondering if the kitchen care inspiring the original concept may suffer under the Indian restaurant model? Or maybe no one will notice.
For some reason a Tifflin in Philly has me wondering if Philly ever had Kosmo.com branch. Seems with all the bikes, it'd be a natural match.

This new restaurant has already made it to today's (12/07/06)Philadelphia Inquirer (Under Food Section).
Also, if you visit www.tiffinstore.com now, you can see/print their menu (it is in pdf format).. It has store contact info as well.

Re: Re: New Indian Restaurant/Delivery on Girard called "Tiffin"
I have a real problem with this place- I can't stop ordering from them. By now I've had almost everything on their "Tiffin Store" menu and it is all great- In particular, the Tandoori Chicken is nothing short of succulent, and the mint chutney is like throwing a party for your mouth.
Has anyone ordered one of "Tiffin Boxes"?

Re: New Indian Restaurant/Delivery on Girard called "Tiffin"
Tried it tonight (pick-up at their restaurant). Good stuff! Prices were good and the food was very good. The portions were decent but not as large as I was expecting after reading the other reviews. Overall a great addition to the area. Good luck!
|
|
|
Re: New Indian Restaurant/Delivery on Girard called "Tiffin"
I second Yum on that -- after the other posts, I was a little disappointed with the portions. They were slightly smaller than the Indian place I last ordered from (before moving). We hadn't had any Indian food since we moved in months ago, so I ate a lot more than I should have in one sitting.
The food was very good and I'll be ordering from them again.

Re: New Indian Restaurant/Delivery on Girard called "Tiffin"
Excellent food, I was satisfied with the portions as was my girlfriend. She consistently orders shrimp when eating asian food and is used to getting shorted, only getting 3-5 shrimp. Tiffin had something like 10-12 shrimp and her sauce was fantastic. Chicken Vindaloo was very good but a bit too spicy for my taste. Definitely getting food from Tiffin again, I reccomend you do the same.

Re: New Indian Restaurant/Delivery on Girard called "Tiffin"
tiffin is slated to start table service tomorrow (wed). the chick-n-fish sign has been replaced with a tiffin sign and the dining room has a fresh coat of paint, new carpeting, and new furniture. check it out...

I will be there for the grand opening--I'm sure I won't be alone.

Re: New Indian Restaurant/Delivery on Girard called "Tiffin"
i thought they were super generous with the amount of meat in the entrees. usually when i get lamb saag for example its just a few chunks of lamb theirs had tons of huge chunks.

Re: New Indian Restaurant/Delivery on Girard called "Tiffin"
Very good meal tonight at the grand opening. The waiter was extremely attentive, and the bright colors in the dining room nicely complement the wonderful food. Swing by 710 W Girard and check this out!

Re: New Indian Restaurant/Delivery on Girard called "Tiffin"
What's the eat-in-area like? Is it a normal sit-down type set-up or more like carry-out? Is it BYO?
|
|
|
Re: New Indian Restaurant/Delivery on Girard called "Tiffin"
The dining room has about 5 tables with each table having about 2 to 5 chairs. I don't know if it's BYOB, but they do serve Poland Spring water at no extra charge.

Re: New Indian Restaurant/Delivery on Girard called "Tiffin"
I've gotten take out from Tiffin twice and have enjoyed it very much. The food tastes fresh (I could taste the individual spices), and I was pleasantly surprised by all the extras that come at no charge - a couple of chutneys, pickle, raita, and half-portions of lentils and cabbage. The lentils and cabbage combined are equivalent to a whole extra entree. Two entrees, naan, and all of the above for under $20 strikes me as an excellent deal, especially for what appears to be high quality food.
An excellent addition to the area in my view. I hope they thrive.
Best,
Matt

Re: New Indian Restaurant/Delivery on Girard called "Tiffin"
We finally ordered from them last night, I expected something good from all these reviews, but what we ate was amazing! The food wasn't greasy (as some places can be) and the spices were just right. My boyfriend moved down here from an area of north Jersey that had tons of great Indian food, and this was the first place that reminded him of home. The samosas were perfect and the entress were wonderful. I am thrilled that such an amazing place opened so close, I see us eating Tiffin about once a week

Re: New Indian Restaurant/Delivery on Girard called "Tiffin"
We ordered the pre-order style "Tiffin" meals and they were truly delicious. One of the meals was served with Tandoori vegetables and they were awesome!

Re: New Indian Restaurant/Delivery on Girard called "Tiffin"
I'm so happy to see Indian in the neighborhood! And Tiffin is especially good.
I ordered appetizers and entrees for two people for about $25. We had malai kofta and chicken tikka masala. There was lots of chicken and the meal was delicious! The raita is especially tasty too.
Let's support this business and keep it in the neighborhood.

Ate lunch there today and it was fantastic, not an expert on Indian food but it was some of the best I ever had.

Re: New Indian Restaurant/Delivery on Girard called "Tiffin"
To take our minds of the impending casino onslaught...
Ordered from Tiffin for the second time last night and it was even better than the first. For something really kicky try the Chicken Vindaloo; the samosas were fresh & hot, crazy good. If you don't feel like going out on a cold night their delivery service is a fine thing.

Re: New Indian Restaurant/Delivery on Girard called "Tiffin"
This place is amazing. I can't say enough wonderful things about the food. From some of the places around here for take-out, I must say I was a little nervous. I could eat from there every day.

Re: New Indian Restaurant/Delivery on Girard called "Tiffin"
Had some the other day, I'm not an Indian food expert but everything was delicous and they put labels on everything (including the rice) so I knew what was for me and what was for the wife. A nice touch for us Indian food neophytes. I'm definitly ordering from there again.

I hope this guy makes a million dollars, he deserves it. Fantastic food at very fair prices. the mexican joints can learn from this, 7-8 bucks for a burrito? yikes, should be 5 tops.
