This coming Wednesday enjoy an evening of sensational food and wine while soaking in the sultry jazz of pianist Neil Podgurski's Trio at the legendary Ortlieb's Jazz Haus (847 N. 3rd Street). It's the second of a series of Sugar-Free dinners spotlighting neighborhood institutions that make Northern Liberties unique and real.
Rated one of the Top 10 Philadelphia Experiences by CityPaper, this sophisticated supper club was recently given a renovation and face-lift by its new owners -- good guys Kevin Mayberry and Andre Myketey -- to celebrate its 20th anniversary. Chef extraordinaire Michael Suminski is conjuring up culinary fireworks Cajun-style -- the jambalaya and ribs are to die for! A portion of all diners' checks will benefit the NLNA's "Fight to Re-Site."
Reservations are recommended 215-922-1035.
Whoa!
I'm there. I've been meaning to check out Ortlieb's for some time.
I can't imagine anything more destructive to our community than a slots barn three blocks from Liberty Lands with all of the crime and traffic that it would bring.
Thanks guys.
The most direct route from Sugar House to Liberty Lands is across Laurel St. Sugar House is, for all intents and purposes, across the street from where Laurel (and Frankford, from a different angle) intersects Delaware Avenue. If you start there and head due west on Laurel, you hit Liberty Lands at Bodine.
Is the distance three blocks? It depends. Delaware Ave to Front, to 2nd, to Bodine, is a bit like Zero St. to 1st St. to 2nd St. to 2.5 St. By that reckoning it's certainly within three blocks.
But Mapquest says the actual distance is 0.39 miles. At 10 or 12 city blocks per mile (the two standard measures), the distance is between 4 and 4.7 blocks.
The larger question is, how will Sugar House impacts radiate outwards? I think the answer to this question might be different for cars than pedestrians, and might be different for traffic than for crime. And I think a lot of variables and uncertainties are involved in trying to predict the impacts.
