FORMER racing greyhound Batman was a bit of a slow starter in life.

Despite being bred to win at the track his heart was never quite in it and the dog – previously known as Flying Batman – never quite made the grade.

Now he works as the only specially-trained “reading dog” in the UK as part of a pioneering scheme to improve the literacy skills of reception-age children.

Excited youngsters at Arden Forest Infant School in Bedworth take turns to read with him once-a-week as Batman rests his paw on the page.

Teachers at the school have hailed the popular pooch for getting pupils excited about reading and threw him a special celebration for his fifth birthday yesterday.

Reception teacher Debra Gage said: “The children absolutely adore him and he has brought them so much confidence. They always know which day he’s coming in and they say ‘Can we read with Batman?’

“He puts his paw on the page and he’s very gentle with them. It helps them interact and they just enjoy sitting and talking to him.”

Great story Fiona. My two boys wish that Batman would visit their school.
