Re-homing our third

Hi everyone

We will be re-homing our third grey this coming Saturday, a little girl called Poppy. We already have two, Lama and Lucy, both of whom we got from Celia & Jimmy last August. We were wondering if anyone had any tips on how to go about integrating Poppy with our two, as we'd like them all to get on as soon as possible. Celia helped with some info at the walk last Sunday, any other ideas would be much appreciated!

Cheers
Steven, Elaine, Lama & Lucy (and Poppy!)

Re: Re-homing our third

Hey guys,
Congrats on taking the plunge for number three (speaking from experience 4 is a nice round number lol ).

Having recently taken number 4 ( Isis) thought we'd share a few of our experiences. We are far from experts but thought we'd share some of our thoughts.

The dogs sort themselves out, we had lots of growls and snaps but eventually things settle down and now we have had Isis almost a month all 4 are as thick as thieves! As long as the dogs all got on at their initial meetings everything should be fine. Our second night with Isis was turning in to a nightmare as she was very restless, disturbing everyone until Shayla decided enough was enough and gave her a sharp prolonged growl and rather severe looking snap. To our amazement Isis immediately settled and was fine for the rest of the night. Unless it looks like serious damage is going to happen the hounds should soon establish a level where they live happily together.Sometimes the growling and snapping can be a bit daunting but we found that no physical damage occurred. We resisted using muzzles as much as possible and I am glad to say that we have no aggression now at all (although Isis gets away with murder lol!)

We found that with a gentle laying down of the law and positive reinforcement on our part e.g. sleeping arrangements, feeding order, weeing and pooing outside and walking as part of the pack Isis soon caught on to what was expected of her.( she still sometimes has her own ideas though!)

It is amazing and very rewarding watching how the dogs adapt to having another member of the family and how each dog's personality develops.

We have had Shayla over a year but since Isis appeared she has become a more playful ( and mischievious !) girl. Our other girl ,Rosie ,has become quite the playful clown and will even chase a ball and bring it back to you ( if she feels like it!)

If you have any specific questions we would be happy to answer them if we can! As I have said we are not experts but can only share what worked for us.

Good luck and I'm sure everything will be fine.

Re: Re-homing our third

Just to say we are having the initial meeting on Saturday to see how things go first. Fingers crossed it will be ok.

Re: Re-homing our third

No advice, just wanted to say congratulations! Look forward to seeing Poppy at the next walk. Kathleen + Lady and Bonnie

Re: Re-homing our third

The only thing I would suggest in addition to Keith & Marks comprehensive reply is to have the three dogs meet up on neutral ground. Let the dogs check eachother out with a good sniff. Most greyhounds I've had or met love meeting other greyhounds - just look at the walks!

Re: Re-homing our third

Just want to say Best of luck to you ye like someone already said they do seem to sort it out themselves-as with having 7 now the last boy joined us just over few months ago we to had growls etc but its alot better now xxxxxx

Re: Re-homing our third

ANY MORE ADVICE JUST EMAIL ME.

Re: Re-homing our third

Hi Guys

Thanks for all the advice and support. We met Poppy on neutral ground today. Lots of sniffing and walking later and there seemed to be no obvious problem so we brought Poppy home.

She was initially found abandoned & malnourished on the Sidlaw hills and brought to Brown Street Kennels in Dundee. Her ex mummy rehomed her and she looks really healthy now. Unfortunately she was snapping at the kids in the house so they weren't able to keep her. She is a fantastic wee black girl who seems to be fitting in with the pack fine at the moment.

Will keep you all updated on progress.

Pics asap please elaine and steve xxxxxxxxxx

Re: Re-homing our third

Errrrrr, got some good pics, but thanks to rubbish PC skills we're unsure how to post them to this page!

Poppy has settled in fine however, and we've been really surprised at how well she's been getting on with Lama and Lucy. There's been one or two wee growls, but apart from that they have already accepted her as part of the family.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the next walk!

Cheers
Steven, Elaine, Lama, Lucy and Poppy.
