Quincy

Just a wee update on Quincy,

Well we have had Quincy for just over a year and a half now and he never fails to amaze us. I never thought I would ever see the day when Quincy would happily play with a Jack Russell pup and be the perfect gentleman. But today he did and made me so so proud!! He is so sociable around other dogs now of all breeds.

Thankyou Celia and Jimmy so much.

Re: Quincy

Hi Karen and John,
We're delighted that Quincy is doing so well. That is a great achievement.
Please give him one of our special cuddles.
Jimmy and Celia.

Re: Quincy

He loved his cuddled and he sends some back for his special Auntie and uncle. We will need to try and get up again before the bad weather sets in.

Take care

Re: Quincy

Hopefully the Scottish weather will not be bad! I am getting ready for my first visit to Scotland next week. I am hoping to see Loch Lomond in the sun:-)

Re: Quincy

I hope the weather is nice for you Stan. Loch lomond is a beautiful setting. We were away last week and had some lovely crisp mornings. I'll keep everything crossed for you.

Karen

Re: Quincy

Thank you Looking forward to the visit!

Re: Quincy

That's fantastic. Do you have any tips on how to achieve this?!!
Pilot is ecstatic to see my friend's smallish Cockerpoo but he seems to think she is a giant rabbit. He is fired up in 'track' fashion! She is constantly darting about and I don't trust him without his muzzle when we walk together. (He grabbed a mouthful of fluff once but no harm done) He seems ok passing sheep and cows - no reaction - but doesn't normally meet other small dogs to get used to them.
I have a friend who might visit with a Dachshund...
Thanks!

Re: Quincy

Stan, we've had some lovely days recently, but today was horrible! Fingers crossed it's fine for your holiday.

Re: Quincy

I think Dachshunds do not like being led by the nose by other dogs. We have one in Poland and he is very loyal but gallant when attacked even by big dogs. The best way is to keep Pilot muzzled when your friends come. That is a safe option.

Kathleen,
I do hope to have a nice time up there. Anyway I am used to the cold (it is quite cold in Poland in winter but very warm or even hot in summer). The only thing I am afraid of is the damp in the air which is a new thing to me as even when it is cold in Poland it is easier to cope with it because the air is much drier and the cold does not go straight to your bones. Just a different type of climate Thank you!

Re: Quincy

Hi Karen & John,(and also everyone on the other post about dogs off the lead)I should have added that Mindy was always absolutely fine with the same Cockerpoo, but she was about 9, when they first met. She just looked on disdainfully at the whirling dervish!!(She would have killed a cat if she could have caught one though, I am 100% sure of that)
So what I really meant was, how did you choose the point where it was safe to remove Quincy's muzzle? I thought that Pilot would always need to wear the muzzle with other small dogs, but your post gave me hope. (We've only had him for 6 months)
He's always on the lead as we rent a (sheep)farm cottage. He wore his muzzle when he went to the vets in Kirkwall. Many thanks.
Thanks also Stan, and I do hope you enjoy Scotland.
Best wishes to everyone at GRF! Pilot is a star. xx

Re: Quincy

Hello Iona,

Apologies that its taken me so long to reply. We have had Quincy for just over a year and a half now. And it is only in the last six months i would say that I am totally confident meeting other dogs out and about. It has taken a lot of determination, patience and a lot of corrections to get to where we are. You need to ensure that Pilot knows you are the leader and try to remain relaxed and confident whilst meeting other dogs. We were very lucky in that people would stop and talk or walk alongside us which allowed Quincy to socialise and meet other dogs. We took the decision to remove his muzzle as dogs were coming up to him being aggressive and he could not protect himself. We always have him on a lead therefore he is under control. If we go to the vets he generally gets his muzzle on because its a strange environment and there's often small furry things.

Be patient with Pilot and you will both get there.

Re: Quincy

Hi Karen & John, Thank you so much for that. It's really helpful to hear your experiences. As you can gather, Mindy our previous Greyhound was quite a different character. Also, I was never given a muzzle for her in the first place and it was never discussed as far as I can remember! (She was exactly the same age as Pilot when I first got her but friendly with all dogs - just dire with cats)
He does know that despite being gorgeous, he is 'the littlest one of the pack'.

Thanks again and we will persevere!Love to Quincy from Pilot too.xx
