KENNEL UPDATE

The last few days at the kennels have been hectic.
On Saturday evening at 9.30pm we received a dog called Timmy who had broken his leg at the track. We phoned the local on duty vet who took Timmy in. A weekend vet call out cost £180 and an x-rays costing £300 were taken. We were told that the operation would cost £2000 to fix the leg. Timmy was transferred to Bob, our own vet, who assessed that the operation was not straightforward and the broken bones would require to be pinned by a specialist. We took Timmy to the East Neuk specialist vet. He concurred with Bob's prognosis and Timmy will be operated on tomorrow. The cost, if no complications set in should not exceed £2700. We believe that the final cost for everything will be around £4000. It is expensive, but that is what a greyhound rescue is for.
Also, on Sunday a little girl dog Star was brought in with a back injury. Bob x-rayed her on Monday and a fractured pelvis showed up !!!! Fortunately in a non weight bearing area. It is believed that with a few months' total rest the crack will calcify and she should be fine. ( Remember Foxy ? ).
In all bad situations angels appear. Bert and Irene raised a good sum of money for us at a meet and greet at Pets at Home. Pets at Home also have given us a wonderful £1346.66 cheque after the Kirkcaldy store and its' customers raising that amount over the Santa Paws Fundraising Appeal. Bless them all.
In the middle of the melee we managed to rehome and take in some dogs.
Celia and Jimmy.

Re: KENNEL UPDATE

Jimmy and Celia,

Thank you for looking after these dogs as you say that's what a rescue does and Greyhound Rescue Fife or you two always roll the boat out on these occasions for the Hounds in need.

Again as you said remember Foxy she has made a remarkable recovery thanks to you and Marion so paws crossed for Star.

We are pleased to be involved with the dog show again this year doing our usual bits to help make it a success again this year. Hears hoping we can raise a similar amount of money again this year as we have done over the last few years. With these vet bills you could do with another successful show to help fund them.

This is my opportunity to say to anyone that could help with the dog show to get in touch with Alex Morrison by email or by posting on the link below because we are still a bit short for bodies this year. If you are able to assist us in any way then you are also helping these two Hounds Timmy and Star as well as all the other kennel Hounds.

You can follow the forum all the dog show updates and things we need help with!!!

Dog Show - Helpers needed!

Thank you Jimmy and Celia and all the Volunteers for caring for Timmy and Star and Fingers and Paws crossed that things go Ok for Timmy tomorrow and thanks last but not least to the Vet doing the operation A Huge Big Thank You.

Re: KENNEL UPDATE

Oh dear. Sorry to hear about these two hounds. But they are in the best of care with you.

We continue to sell the badges and currently have about £300 for you. Every little helps towards the cost I guess.

See you soon

Love Kaz xx

Re: KENNEL UPDATE

Thank you for your kind words folks and all your kind help.
Star is simply to rest for a few months so we don't anticipate many problems.
Timmy, on the other hand, was successfully operated on today but the operation took several hours when it was discovered that the ends of the radius and ulna bones were both very damaged at the ends. This made it difficult to join up. He is plated and bolted. The bones broke the skin in the accident.
He is returning to the kennels on Saturday where he will have six weeks total rest. Hopefully he should make a good recovery provided infection does not set in.
Jimmy.

Re: KENNEL UPDATE

Can I ask why the poor dog got brought to you to have it treated and paid for? We're just wondering if dog's are insured when they race. Apologies if we've got the wrong end of the stick.Does the owner just dump it? Can't stop thinking about this. Sorry!

Re: KENNEL UPDATE

Hi Elinor

Dont get many/ if any insurance companies that will insure a racer. The ones that would cover them will be very expensive and probably wont cover anything.
So then leaving poor Jimmy n Celia to foot the bill, purely cause they wont let an animal suffer.
But for a future owner they might struggle to get the dog insured for bone related injuries, hopefully an insurance company would limit it to just that leg, but many kick up a fuss about it.

Poor dog doesnt probably know what to think

Katie

Re: KENNEL UPDATE

Hi Guys.
No, the racing dogs are not normally insured.
The owner, when he saw the magnitude of the injury wanted the dog PTS. His wife did not want that and brought the dog to see us. It licked my hand - - - - - - - what would you have done ?
Timmy is successfully through his operation and s coming back to the kennels tomorrow. The operation went well but took several hours. He must rest for a good few weeks but, apart from a limp, should make a great recovery.
That is all that we ask for.
Jimmy and Celia.

Re: KENNEL UPDATE

Thanks for that info people. Celia and Jimmy you are always the best!

Re: KENNEL UPDATE

Hi Celia and Jimmy,
I'm up to my neck in builders (new extension) at the moment, or I'd offer to convalesce either Timmy or Star for you. I just don't have the right environment just now.
Keep us posted re on-going requirements/expenses and we'll do our best to help.
Jock's dying to show you his new fully furred coat so we'll be over as soon as we can.
Best wishes,
Marion xx

Re: KENNEL UPDATE

Hi Jimmy
I personally would have done exactly what you and Celia are doing now. Don't understand why the owner thought PTS was the best/ only thing, there is always something that can be done. Just further shows that they claim to care then when it all boils down to it they dont care. I also can't wait until you guys have him fighting fit and get him ready for a forever home. Will be great to see him come through that and then get adopted will be fantastic.
You and Celia really do the upmost that you can for every dog and begin the mould of making them fine pets (of course with the help of your volunteers. If only I lived closer I would get over there every weekend and help). So timmy and star you now have to do one tiny little favour for all of us... get better and then it'll be forever home time after that.

Re: KENNEL UPDATE

Hi there, is there an update on this boys recovery?

Sent with kindest Regards,
Angie x

Re: KENNEL UPDATE

Hi Angie.
He is recovering well, thank you.
Apart from not being allowed to walk more than 10 metres at a time for the next month, he is coming along well.

Re: KENNEL UPDATE

This is one of several reasons why we run our annual dog show to bring in much needed financial support for when these unfortunate eventualities happen. The selfless lengths that Celia and Jimmy go to save a greyhound’s life has no limits and has to be applauded and respected.

While this type of injury will end this dogs racing career it still has a lot to offer. For over 8 years now we have had endless enjoyment and affection from our two greys. No mater what mood you are in, or how bad you may feel, they are always there to bring a smile to your face, whether it is just their mannerisms or just cuddling in to you when down, they always share their affection freely.

I certainly know if I was a greyhound who I would want “batting” for me in my corner. Unfortunately as you have seen in this post this doesn’t come cheap and with GRF being one of the largest sanctuaries in the UK the bills can soon mount up. The majority of funding that helps keep our dogs safe until they find their forever homes comes from the public and various fundraising events throughout the year. Therefore to coin a phrase from the First World War “your greyhound sanctuary needs you”

We hope that as many of you as possible can turn out in numbers to support our forthcoming dog show where every penny raised goes to the kennels. Your support for our cause is always much appreciated by us and certainly our current incumbents. Please support our show and future GRF fundraisers
