Advantix?

Jake is our first greyhound and we still have our L plates firmly attached. Just back from a check up at the vets and they suggested that we use Advantix - we do quite a bit of walking in woodland etc so we wanted something for ticks as well as fleas. I've read the 2011 posts on the forum about this subject, just wanted to pick everyone's brains now in 2016 to check that Advantix is still ok to use. We don't have any cats in the house.

Jake seems to be settling in really well, must have done some clicker training at some point because he is very alert whenever we click the top of a pen. He has put on 4 kilos and quite a bit of hair since November.

Any advice welcome. Rachel

Re: Advantix?

Hi Rachel
Advantix is a Spot On Flea Treatment ,havent used that brand myself but basically the only difference is the brand name. There are about 3 different kinds of chemical make up in spot on treatments .If you type in Spot On flea Treatments for Dogs you will see all that is available ,in my opinion they all work equally well. If you buy on line they are cheaper,it goes by the weight of the dog you would be looking 25-40kg dose ,let me know how you get on.

Bert

Re: Advantix?

I've always used Frontline (recommended by my vet). I buy it in bulk when it's on offer at Pets at Home.

Re: Advantix?

I recall that the vet gave me Advantix once, instead of Frontline. I found that it left a very sticky white residue on their coats, which took a while to wear off.
I also buy online now, as it's much cheaper.

Re: Advantix?

Many thanks, everyone. Will take all advice on board. And while Jake is not exactly on a diet, he certainly isn't going to get too many extra goodies in case he piles on the pounds.

Re: Advantix?

Hi.

I have used Advantix Booker, Tula and Nubis. It is the most commonly used brand in Spain where I live, more so than Frontline.

They were all find with it, although I found that Tula seemed a bit more itchy than normal for a couple of days. She would lean her back against the wall and walk along it...

I think Advantix protects against a wider range of bites than frontline, such as leishmanias which Frontline don't protect against. Of course Leishmanias does not exist in the UK so you should be OK with Frontline. I have recently changed to a product called Prac-Tic which does all the same things, but is a lot cheaper. It was recommended by my vet who specialises in the breed.

Be careful about exposing your own skin to the stuff. (any of them) They are designed to go through thick dog skin which is a lot thicker than human skin, so avoid bare skinned rugby cuddles for a few days after you have put it on as you could get a bit unwell with nacho etc. Speaking from personal experience here...

Re: Advantix?

Last paragraph should have read "a bit unwell with NAUCIA etc"... and above that should have read "RUBBIE" cuddles, not rugby....

Not a friend of auto-correct...
