Jumping over excited dog

We rescued 2 greyhounds about 6 months ago. Since they arrived we've gone through various issues. Firstly Blake got very anxious when he was left in the house & tried to eat his way through a door. We eventually gave him the run of the house & he seems more settled when we go out - no more destruction. However when we come home he is overly excitable and jumps up on any of the family for a good few minutes and regularly during the day. We've tried various things...going back out the house to wait for him to calm down...he doesn't..he just jumps up at the door. We ignore him...but he doesn't stop for that either. It is impossible to move to the side out the way because of space and the size of him, but we try to turn our backs to him but he still jumps up on our backs. When he does eventually act more calmly we give him attention but it doesnt make him calm down any quicker. I am just surprised he's not caused anyone a serious injury yet, but am worried he will one day. Any advice on what else we can do as its getting us all down now.

Re: Jumping over excited dog

My mother had this problem with her over excited large lab, he would knock you back out the door before you had a chance to get through the door. We ended up putting a baby gate in the hall, which was a barrier when anyone came through the front door and we just turned our backs on him until he calmed down. Only then would the baby gate be opened and he would be rewarded for waiting patiently - it didn't take long for him to catch on and the baby gate is no longer in use.

As much as it is a problem, remember the hound is expressing his pleasure at seeing you.

It could just be an expression of separation anxiety. Have you tried staying in the house but going into another room and closing the door on him? Then he knows you're home but he can't actually get to you till he calms down. Then you could give him a treat. Bryn used to be a bit like that and it worked for him, but every dog's different.
