Greyhound seizures

We would like to share our experience, research and findings which we feel could be helpful and beneficial to others.

The result.

We feel it is safe to say now.
Our Greyhounds Seizures have stopped.
Additionally,.. vitality, energy levels and sparkle have returned. Our Greyhound now enjoys the health etc of a much younger dog... and his poops are much smaller and more pick up friendly!:relaxed:

How it was done.

Boost vitamin B12 spray. (For humans, available at Holland and Barrett ect) Dose: 1 spray with morning meal and 1 spray at lunch time. Spray on top of food. (Dose reduced after 2 months to 1 spray on morning meal.
We also made changes to his diet that we have documented later.

History.

We adopted Blackie in March 2010 from GRF. He was 2 1/2 years old.
A high energy spirited boy! He remained this way for 7 years.
At 5.30am on the 20th January 2017 at the age of 9 1/2 years, Blackie suffered a full Gran mal seizure. It lasted 10 mins. He was exhausted afterwards and took five days to recover.
We took him to our vet straight away who informed us this could be an isolated incident, he checked him over and pronounced him tired but well. He suggested we keep a diary and should this occur again, and if we could, we should video it!
All seemed well until sixteen weeks later when Blackie suffered two Gran mal seizures four hours apart.

Then single Gran mals on 5th June and 6th August.
TOTAL= 5 full Gran mal seizures.

Blackie was not seizing frequently enough that he would require medication which, by the way,has some pretty serious side effects of it's own.
Our vet said this was pretty much the only option!
We discussed our thoughts regarding B12 and he was enthusiastic for sure.
We began B12 and raw egg in June 2017
.
(If your grey is already on medication then obviously consult your vet if your considering trying this)

It's important to mention that for a few weeks before Blackies first seizure we observed that he was slowing down a bit. We just thought it was the aging process; after all he was 9 1/2 years old... right?

Research.

Just in case you're reading this and you are a newbie... Greyhounds are not only beautiful creatures that look "so graceful in full flight" they are also incredible natural athletes.
The key to their natural athletic ability is their blood.

As a long term competitive cyclist I can only dream of having a greyhounds blood values.

So what keeps our blood healthy?
A diet appropriate to our species, quality regenerative sleep and regular exercise are the top three.

The same fundamentals apply to your Greyhound!

(also, recent research has been looking into B12 for Althzeimers disease in humans.)

OUR FINDINGS (and thoughts)

In humans, from the age of 50 approx, our ability to absorb vitamin B12 diminishes. (The reason for this is because B12 is the largest molecule vitamin and as we age the stomach struggles to absorb it)
Symptoms of B12 deficiency in humans are.. low energy levels, depression,
Forgetfulness, lethargy. If things get bad enough even pernicious anaemia.
Pernicious Anaemia is treated with B12 injections because without B12 you cannot absorb Iron.

So back to our greyhound pals with high hematocrit (red blood cell) levels.
We noticed Blackie was tired and a wee bit sluggish to get going.. Old age, right?.. Wrong!

BLACKIES NEW DIET.

Breakfast consisting of Porridge made with water and 1/4 tsp of cinnamon, tsp of honey and one spray of Boost B12 spray.
Honey is great for the brain .. Great for Human brains also!!

two main meals consisting of.
3x heaped spoonful of well cooked brown rice
3x heaped spoonful of cooked pasta.
1/3 can of original chappie
1/2 can of sardines
30g approx of home cooked chicken (no skin).. Keep the stock!
a few pieces of shop bought turkey or ham.
cooked vegetables. either broccoli, peas, carrots, turnip, sweet potatoes
Raw vegetables. spinach, plum tomato, cucumber ect
Add some of that chicken stock to taste.
Also, To “one” of the above meals add a raw egg!

Possible further research?

From when we started the B12 treatment , honey, diet change ect (June 2017) Blackie suffered another seizure. It was of less duration and the brain and body recovered much quicker.

If anyone else has a greyhound that is having seizures, maybe they could try this and report their findings?

The only other dog we know who has tried B12 spray is a 12 year old Jack Russell who has cushings disease and arthritis. Her owner has been very impressed with her dogs energy and enthusiasm for life that her and her mum are now taking it themselves!

Note also, Boost B12 spray is nano technology and is designed to be sprayed directly onto the inner cheek or under the tongue, however this is not necessary for your dog we have found. If you are taking it yourself then follow the instructions.

NB. Not all B12 vitamin sprays are created equal. The Boost B12 vitamin oral spray contains 1000% B12 per single spray. Check and make sure if your purchasing an alternative that you administer the correct amount of B12.
We hope that we haven’t just got lucky and that other greyhounds who have suffered with seizures can also achieve the same result.

George, Debra and Blackie

Re: Greyhound seizures

I have copied and saved this advice in case I should need it in the future.
I hope Blackie continues to be healthy.

Re: Greyhound seizures

I have copied this too, like Sheila, just in case. So far Kitty, who will be seven in April, remains healthy, but you never know. Thank you so much for sharing this. Good luck Blackie!

Re: Greyhound seizures

Thanks for sharing that with us, we hope that Blackie continues to be a happy and healthy Greyhound

Re: Greyhound seizures

Thanks for passing this on to everyone.

So glad Blackie is doing well
