Greyhounds make greyt blood donors!

For those of you not on Facebook (pics are posted there!)

Yohann (AKA tripawd Kyle) and Georgia (AKA Dixie) have been busy Greyhounds today. They’ve become lifesavers with the Pet Blood Bank! Over the next few days, their donated blood will be given to save EIGHT dogs 💕

We should know tomorrow if either of them have ‘universal blood’ which means their donations can go to any other dog. Greyhounds have between 80-90% chance of having this blood type so the odds are good.

To put this in context, it’s relatively recently that Glasgow vet school has stopped holding greyhounds. Once finished racing, some poor dogs were donated to the vet school to be used as blood donors. This no longer happens partly because of the blood bank.

Signing up is very easy on their website. Criteria is...
- must be under the age of 8
- must be vaccinated
- must be ok to be handled
- must be over 25kgs
- must be healthy and not on meds

Georgia and Yohann just laid on a comfy bed and gave a pint of blood each while they were smothered with attention and treats from the volunteers. Yohann especially took full advantage of his predicament to get maximum attention and beat Georgia for treats. 😂. They got toys, treats and their bandanas to bring home with them. The other bonus is you get a full blood screening done on your dog once a year - for those of you, like me, who nearly transfer their salary to their vet, it’s a good deal 😂

Am very proud of our hounds tonight 💕

Re: Greyhounds make greyt blood donors!

Pinza had the privilege of donating yesterday for the first time. It was a great experience and he was relaxed throughout. We are very proud of our boy and look forward to his next donation in 3 months time.
