Re: Comment on London Calling by Peter

I wish we'd met, but alas, no. Here's the Six Degrees of PH connection, however: my late brother Curtis was the manager of Bond's in NYC when the Clash did their long long stint there. Curtis ordinarily ran discoteques in Manhattan, which I guess Bond's was when he took it over. Knowing his tastes in music (classical, disco and not a lot else), I'm sure he didn't enjoy the Clash very much. But he invited me down to see them one night, and they were just wonderful. I personally loved the Clash records back when they were new. They certainly meant a lot to me in NC, although probably still not as much as the Television albums. I like LC a lot more nowadays, though. It is an album of remarkable sprawling depth, and Guy Stevens' production seems impressively timely. If you haven't given it a spin lately, do so and see if that isn't the case.

Re: Re: Comment on London Calling by Peter

Thanks for your input, Peter. London Calling gets a spin at least once a month at my house--always has. I agree that the depth of Strummer & Jones's songwriting is remarkable on this album, so much so that I can listen to it over and again. I find "Hateful," "Clampdown," and "Death or Glory" to be particularly potent. Man, that's one band I wish I had seen.... Of note: the cover of London Calling (Pennie Smith's photo of Paul Simonon smashing his bass at the Palladium) was judged by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to be the definitive depiction of rock and roll. I couldn't agree more.
