Peter, can you give me some advice

Hey my band just got signed with Chuck D from Public Enemy.

What publishing would you recommend?

I know a lot of folks use BMI but how is ASCAP or BUG

Do any of these let you retain the rights to your songs?

What would be the best for a smaller band?

Thanks
Shawn

Re: Peter, can you give me some advice

I'm not Peter but can help a bit. Bug is not a performing rights organization like BMI or ASCAP, they're an administrator. All let you keep control of your songs. You need a good entertainment lawyer to help you sort this stuff out. Some record companies insist you sign with their publishing company - don't do that! Also many companies want you to agree to accept only a partial percentage of your mechanical royalties. You need a good lawyer to go through the contracts.

Re: Peter, can you give me some advice

Let me just second that advice: GET A GOOD LAWYER. Entertainment deals are complex, and you need somebody who has no connection to your label (no matter how noble and honorable they are). I'm in a different facet of the entertainment business, but the business end of this world is the same all over: it all comes down to money, and you must be protected.
