Comments: Dear Paul! I'm Leo Arreaza, you were kind enough to put me in your guest list for the Johnny Winter Blues Band show in Annapolis, when I was hopeless to get a ticket for the show, as I told to my wife there is still a lot of people with talent and a heart of gold like you have. I'm still impressed about the fact that you wrote the track "I'm the bluesman", which is amazing, there is no song like that in the blues world. Since my humble point of view that song makes you immortal!!! Besides this songs, my favorites are "I smell smoke", "Lone wolf" and "That wouldn't satisfy". No expecting less the show was awesome!

Comments: Hey Paul, Congrats on Johnny's album being nominated for a Grammy. No doubt a large part of the album's success is due to your input as a player and producer. On a related note, I am being honored with a Blues Foundation "Keeping the Blues Alive" award in journalism - as is Dick Shurman as a producer, coincidentally. Once again, congrats on a well-deserved nomination. Let's stay in touch. Best, Dave Rubin

Comments: This email is addressed to Paul, however I'm not sure if he (you) manages this website and gets these emails. The point is, I found an article on theshredzone.com that Paul (herein referred to as 'you') wrote that explained the concept of Resolved and Unresolved chords. I've read many different articles and books dealing with music theory, guitar, modes, etc.. and have heard mentioned more than once the concept of tension and resolution. However, nowhere else was I able to find a more concise and clear explanation of this concept. Pointing out that the 4th degree of the ionian scale is the key to all of music's tension and release was something that helped unlock a door that has blocked my progression of understanding how to utilize modes for the last 13 years. I could explain more about how it's helped my understanding of modality, but that isn't the point. I don't strive to be, nor do I assume I ever will, be a professional musician in the sense that I earn my living that way. But I'm on quest to master my instrument and I define that quest as a continual journey of learning and exploration. You have helped me more than I could have ever imagined you would have, since I've never met or heard of you. I would like to express my sincere thanks for contributing this wisdom to guitar playing community. I am in your debt.

Comments: Hey Paul, I have a question for you. I'm a guitarist who is currently going through a period of stagnation. I play light jazz and blues mainly (though I wouldn't call myself a jazz guitarist by any means). But the trouble I'm having is note selection and scale selection behind altered chords. How do you find what works and make it sound musical? For example, behind an A7b5, what would sound musical without sounding like you're playing wrong notes trying to find the right notes? thanks, Greg

You don't need to thank me, it was an honour for me to interview a legend of Heavy Metal. I'm sending you in attached file the front cover art of my new zine, O REBATE RNR. Fantastic to know your part on "I'm a Bluesman". A right title, of course. I think you are honoured by playing together a Woodstock survivor. As honoured as young Headbanger playing with you or Joe. Greetings Luiz Teixeira.

Comments: Hi Paul, Mike Bowers here. I was playing guitar in the Chris Murphy band for the Johnny gigs in Toronto and London last week. I'm the guy that wanted to get the picture taken with Johnny in London. I just wanted to tell you what a pleasure it was meeting all you guys and offer you my heartfelt thanks for what you did in helping me meet my hero. I've still got a helluva lot of that goofy fourteen year old boy in me when it comes to Johnny, even though I just turned fifty. Watching you guys over those two days it was very apparent to me that you all loved him very much and you took such good care of him. The picture turned out great and I've been on a total high since getting the film developed. I also wanted to to let you know how much I dug your playing and I plan on ordering one of your cds after I make the next payment on my card. Right now I got it maxed out. I bought another amp with it. Haven't told my wife yet. And so it goes. Anyway, that's about it. I wish you all the best with your career and again, thanks for everything. You've made a goofy fourteen year old boy very happy. -Mike

Comments: Paul: Just wanted to say a big THANK YOU for arranging to get my guitar signed by Johnny, last night in Cambridge, Ontario.( I'm the guy who gave him a t-shirt from a past tour in Canada) To meet you guys was, to say the least, a dream come true for me. My memories of Johnny go back to the early 70's when he played a New Year's Eve gig in Toronto, called Winterpop.( with Slade, Thin Lizzy, and Brownsville Station) Part way through the set he would take off his velvet jacket, sit on the edge of the drum riser and play some serious slide stuff. 18,000 people went nuts. Amazing.I've been catching him whenever he swings by this way, ever since. Anyhow, the kids guitar group we're doing will benefit from your kindness. We checked out your personal website ( guitar pick advertising is cool ) and everybody is really interested in what you are doing. We'll all be watching from now on. I've attached a link I ran across for a guy who seems to have a lot of Winter material ( ?? ) Take care and best of luck. http://members.aol.com/rorybase/jwinter.htm Rob Stark p.s. I think what you are doing is kind of like what Johnny did with Muddy Waters. Cheers.

Comments: Dear Paul, I am writing from Mannheim, Germany and through a very complicated story (entry on melodicrock.com - through an answer from the people at the Fuze they informed me about your interview, very interesting, and side. Personally I have interviewed you when you were in L.A. for the Promo of Master Control in the Metal Blade building, we were there taking pictures on the street, I always will remember this very cool and funny interview live, it was 3 people from your band back there I think Joe, I had such a great time ! I am interested to review this your solo CD "LOOK" on our page, if you want that. I do not know if you are promoting your record outside the USA, if you want to send us this disc we will put that on our page, so it would be a very nice addition . Also I am about 99% sure I will play music from you on my Radio show here, as there was only one CD in the last 6 months being sent to me that I haven't played any music from. ( This one was the HARDLINE Live record ) I'm gonna play Uli Jon Roth next week, he will open for UFO here by the way. On our homepage we are very open minded and portray all stiles of good music, I have found this Johnny Winter connection very interesting ! Congratulation Paul ! Very much we would like to review / display this on our website which is http://www.crossover-agm.de you can check there my stuff, in German language, but you know, very detailed and good reviews, like always ( also interviews in English- for example SHY or THUNDER or ROB ROCK or LEE AARON or can confirm my name or check back there. An answer from you would be very welcome, Kind regards, Georg Loegler, Mannheim - Germany for http://www.crossover-agm.de and Rock of Ages Radio-Show on Bermuda-Funk Radio 89.6 / 1054 Mhz www.bermudafunk.org

Comments: hey paul hows it going, long time no see. sorry i didnt get to officially tell you i was moving over here to italy to go to school this year but it all happened so suddenly i wasnt really able to get much done before i left. Ive been over here for the past few months though and its really beginning to get me how much i am stagnating in my guitar playing. I am coming back this summer and staying for my senior year next year and definitely will be taking lessons if you are around and able to teach. The thing is though i really have my mind set on continuing with music as a career (not trying to be on mtv or anything) and i really want to go to a music university to continue studying. I only have like a year and a half left to prepare though and i can barely get through a piece of sheet music. its becoming more evident to me though that i may have to take a year off before college if i want to be prepared for any decent music school. so i am basically writing to you pleading for help because its so god damn hard to find any decent guitar teachers here, let alone ones who speak english. if you could send me anyyyyything to work on or if you could refer any books that you think i should get to keep up with my guitar playing i would be greatly appreciative. thanks, andy

You mentioned to me that you might be able to recommend some good blues books to purchase to further my guitar playing. Also, what about scales/modes books? I have trouble memorizing all these patterns in many positions. And by the way, in order to achieve that "glass-y" sound on a Fender, use the middle/bridge pickup and roll down slightly on the volume knob, right? Thanks very much. Take care, Jeff

You know, Thrash is cool and all but not too many bands are making the really good straight ahead Power Metal with the big vocals and the catchy riffs anymore. Man, if you brought back Liege Lord or something like it, with those kinds of songs, at this point in time, it would work like a charm. Anyway, let us know what you guys are up to! We're sure that whatever you do will sound killer! Talk to ya soon, Bruce unt Joe
