Re: Anybody else know about a Holsapple (I think) song called "Second Time Around"?

Here are the lyrics:

Well, the first time around, as I think we all recall,
It went very very fast til we slammed into a wall
And we called to a halt as we drew up on our brakes
It wasn't anybody's fault, just a series of mistakes
And we swore a lot of oaths about the things we would've done
To make it better than before, make it last til kingdom come
But if you really wanna know, when push comes to shove,
the second time around is less about love.

The second time around is not much different from the first,
You give a little take and you take a little worse
And you take a little less for a longer block of time
And everything you thought you learned, it isn't worth a dime
It's less about love, more about need
Less about great and more about greed
Finally finding out when enough is enough
The second time around is less about love.

The second time around is the same as all the rest
The first time was the worst time, but the second's second best
And we all somehow survive, we all escape alive looking
Faintly forward to numbers three and four and five,
And six, seven and eight, they might very well be great,
But it's a habit you must break before it gets too late.
You will notice, if you're constantly on the rebound,
There's nothing that compares to the second time around.

And it's written/played in an open G on the guitar.

Love
Peter

Mr. Holsapple can sure write a song. Wow. Along the lines of "Never Before and Never Again".
BTW, can't wait to hear new dB's, new Holsapple and Stamey solo and together.
Keep up the great work Peter.

Re: Re: Re: Anybody else know about a Holsapple (I think) song called "Second Time Around"?

While I'm not familiar at all with "Second Time Around," I agree, Spence, that Sir Holsapple knows how to get emotion from a pen. Those lyrics simply leave me speechless. Peter, give yourself a huge pat on the back. Hell, make it a bear hug! I hope to hear this song on a future recording.

Re: Anybody else know about a Holsapple (I think) song called "Second Time Around"?

If you think "just" reading the lyrics on a page sounds good, it was even better live. Why do you think I've been looking for the song for 12+ years now...? Yep, it sounded great at the show, and that was "only" Peter on guitar. Whether it's (hopefully) eventually recorded as an acoustic or dressed up number with other instruments, I'm sure it'll be great.
Thank you again Peter, for being kind enough to supply the lyrics, as well as to consider putting it on a future recording.

Re: Re: Anybody else know about a Holsapple (I think) song called "Second Time Around"?

Wow -- what incredible lyrics there.
That's reason #1 why Peter is on my list of top pop songwriters. This may now be my second favorite Holsapple lyric. It'll still take a lot to topple "Pretty Damn Smart."

Peter, what is the story, if any, behind that tune? I've always wondered if it was based on an actual person.

Best,
John Micek
