For Bobby Sutliff--Roy Loney stories?

Excuse the non-dB's topic, but I just heard a song from the new Roy Loney album on Little Steven's show. Now, reading up on it, I see that messageboard special-guest-star Bobby Sutliff played some guitar on the record.

Bobby, if you're out there, any stories from the sessions?

Re: For Bobby Sutliff--Roy Loney stories?

Hey Jack,

Sorry, no stories about the sessions at all! What happened is that Career Records (Roy's label) boss and good friend Ron Sanchez contacted me about "fixing" a track that was going into the dumpster. It's a semi Gene Vincent sounding track called Big Time Love. Ron mailed me a disc with all the tracks and I dumped it into Pro Tools. My contribution was a tremelo drenched rhythm part that strongly resembles the main guitar on Born On The Bayou. It did really work and the tune did make it on the album as track number 2. Another cool thing about that song is that Deniz Tek of Radio Birdman plays lead guitar. I've never even met Roy though he's a big hero of mine. I did get to meet Cyril Jordan in San Francisco last year when he came to hear me play and that was way cool.

Thanks so much for the reply, Bobby! Extremely cool to be on the record, regardless how it came together, and awesome that you salvaged the track. Can't wait to hear it! (That last Birdman record was pretty terrific too.) Playing on Loney's record...hanging w/ Jordan...maybe you'll be the guy who finally brings the Groovies back together! :)

Re: Re: For Bobby Sutliff--Roy Loney stories?

As a lot of Bay Area Pop folks know, Cyril has a new band, The Magic Christian, that used to feature Prarie Prince (Tubes/XTC) on drums and Alec Palao (Sneetches/Stingrays) on bass. They left and apparently Clem Burke is playing drums for hire now. Go figure.

Many years back The Sneetches backed Cyril for a one off show playing Groovies songs for a night, as well as several shows where he would join them for an encore or two. They also once collaborated with Chris Wilson for a spotty record for a french label I can't remember and a one off show backing Chris, with Cyril and Roy joining in for various songs.

Somehow the ex-Groovies worked well with The Sneetches. Lots of guitars and harmonies. Too many Cyril stories though so it won't happen again.
